I will update the rankings after the current Pakistan v India series. Although Bangladesh lost the series to Zimbabwe, their victory in the 3rd ODI could have significant implications!

Seems pretty accurate and is interesting how Teams play is affected by home and away situations. Yes i also want to see how much India have gained now.

Apologies but I left the file on my computer at uni so I won't be able to update the rankings for two weeks. Sorry! :(

Well those two weeks have passed, thanks for being patient. Just to remind you (I forgot!), Zimbabwe beat Bangladesh 2-1 and Pakistan lost 2-3 at home to India. Importantly, this is only the second time Bangladesh had played in Zimbabwe so no results were replaced. However recording a win in one match could be significant. India's win replaced a 2-0 Pakistan series victory, so good news for them!

OK so lets see how that affects the rankings:

Home
South Africa 1343 (+13)
Australia 1307 (+14)
Sri Lanka 1133 (+10)
New Zealand 1008 (+13)
West Indies 968 (+11)
England 956 (+8)
India 932 (+6)
Pakistan 838 (-49)
Zimbabwe 271 (+3)
Kenya 121 (+6)
Bangladesh 35

Away
Australia 1340 (-14)
Pakistan 1039 (-6)
India 1022 (+52)
South Africa 1013 (-12)
Sri Lanka 922 (-12)
England 886 (-10)
West Indies 763 (-8)
New Zealand 756 (-4)
Zimbabwe 455 (-2)
Kenya 329 (-1)
Bangladesh 45 (+15)

Total
Australia 1323
South Africa 1178 (+1)
Sri Lanka 1027 (-2)
India 977 (+29)
Pakistan 938 (-28)
England 921 (-1)
New Zealand 882 (+4)
West Indies 865 (+1)
Zimbabwe 363 (+1)
Kenya 225 (+3)
Bangladesh 40 (+8)

So India the big gainers as expected. They climb above South Africa to 3rd on the away table and above Pakistan to 4th overall. Bangladesh improve slightly after a long awaited win but will need to win many more games before they catch the main bunch.

Next change will be after the current West Indies v England and imminent Zimbabwe v Sri Lanka series. Results to be replaced are WI 3-2 ENG and ZIM 1-2 SRL. It seems likely Sri Lanka can expect a win so maybe not a large change there, whereas England might expect to win in WI to close the gap on Pakistan and India.

Well the two most recent series finished WI 2-2 Eng and Zim 0-5 SL.

No position changes, and Zimbabwe the biggest movers, the 5-0 defeat replacing a more competitive 2-1 defeat in the ratings, so they drop even lower. England gained slightly at the expense of West Indies thanks to a 2-2 draw replacing a 3-2 defeat.

Next up is the inaugural series between West Indies and Bangladesh, 3 matches starting on Saturday.

Well I didn't see it coming but the West Indies v Bangladesh series in the event of Bangladesh failing to win a game (although they were close especially in the first ODI!), actually has no effect at all on the rankings.

Therefore if you want to know what the rankings look like, you can check my previous post from last week! :p

Next series will be Zimbabwe v Australia, 3 ODIs starting on Sunday 6th June. (That's assuming Zimbabwe still have ODI status by then! 8-) )

After that we have to wait until the Natwest Series between England, New Zealand and West Indies running from 24 June - 10 July, which could have some very interesting effects on the rankings.

Bazza

International 12th Man
Just a note to say the recent Zimbabwe v Australia series which finished 0-3 had absolutely no effect at all on the rankings because it replaced a series which also finished 0-3 in 1999.

Next up is the NatWest Series between England, New Zealand and West Indies. :)

How does New Zealand-Windies work on friendly soil?

These rankings are based on a 'two series' system. This means that the last two series home, away and at a neutral venue between any two sides are taken into account. Even a one off match counts as a series, and neutral results contribute half towards home and half towards away.

For example, the last two series between Australia and England in Australia were 5-2 and 6-0. So overall, Australia take the rubber 11-2. The last two meetings at a neutral venue were both one off games, and each team won once. So each team gets half a point from these games, making a total of 11.5 - 2.5. If we double this for convenience, we have 23-5.
For NZ v WI, these games will replace a 7-wicket Windies win at Southampton in 1999 - in which Stephen Fleming managed a feat of a 17-ball duck and Twose a 12-ball duck.

Samuel is correct, it will replace this match:

http://www.cricinfo.com/link_to_dat...CARDS/GROUP-B/NZ_WI_WC99_ODI18_24MAY1999.html

ie a 1-0 West Indies victory. Seeing as the other series counted for this fixture is West Indies' win in the 2003 World Cup, New Zealand can gain some ground with a few good results against West Indies in the upcoming Natwest tournament. :)
If we have a fit side. :D Looking forward to this series, though, that's for sure. I love seeing new blood being put out to play!

Well India lower than england in these ratings that too at home. Have u gone crazy or what.

i think u are under the influence of "Really crazy" :p

International 12th Man
No Rajat I haven't gone crazy. As I'm sure you are aware, these rankings are not based on opinion, but derived from statistical analysis of the past two series between each set of nations at each home and on neutral ground.

At the moment, India at home have a winning record against only three major nations, South Africa, Sri Lanka and New Zealand (if we disregard Zimbabwe, Bangladesh and Kenya). They have a losing record against Australia and Pakistan and a drawing record with England and West Indies.

If you look at the away rankings, South Africa and Sri Lanka are average away from home, and New Zealand, England and West Indies are poor. India's mixed record against these weaker teams punishes them overall. Also away from home India have a winning record against only England of the top 8 nations, hence they are fairly low at seventh in the away table.

If you look at the overall rankings, you will see India in fourth position currently. I think that is a fair reflection of their inconsistent performances both home and away.

Bazza is absolutely correct. We need to look at each countries' records against ALL opposition, home and away. Otherwise I could be biased and suggest NZ should be higher than India because they won at home and drew in India. NZ's placing fall is the result of losing at home to PAK and away to ENG.

International 12th Man
Well, about time for an update. This update is regarding the Natwest Series in England, involving New Zealand and West Indies. Clearly NZ were the winners of this tournament and as a result have boosted their ratings by a massive 52 points, and leapfrog England (who failed to make the final), into 6th place.

Soon the rankings will be updated to include the current Asia cup tournament.

Bazza

International 12th Man
OK time for a quick update then. Sri Lanka took the Asia Cup on home soil, not too surprising when you see how strong they are at home and overall although Pakistan and India are two of the strongest teams away from home. Bangladesh continued to prove they are along way behind their local rivals, unfortunately for them their victory over Hong Kong means nothing here. Not many big changes, as many of the results mirrored those they were to replace for ranking purposes.
