Or Durham for that matter (I am sure Durham is in Scotland, though i may be wrong)
Durham (or County Durham) is in Northern England. "Durhamites" or "Durhamians"  may get upset if you called them Scots !! But I think lot of scots drift into Durham and make a significant proportion of the local population. I have personally been to County Durham only once in my whole life, that was about 4 years ago when I went to Darlington to do a locum week there !! :D

Durham is not the answer ! :D

The game in question was just prior to the 1975 World Cup. (if thats any help)

Still no movement !! :D :D

OK here's another clue- The Country whose provincial Team beat the Aussies has a long association with the Cricket World Cup !! :)

JASON

Final give away gifted clue :D - The country whose province beat Australia played in the second World Cup in 1979 for the first time and several World Cups after that.

Infact they have the record for the 2 lowest scores in World Cup History !! :D (now that should be easy )

The provincial Team goes by the name of Eastern................(name of country) :D

Correct . It was Eastern Canada that beat Australia in preparatory games, when Australia played in Canada before the First World Cup in 1975 !!

Your turn . :)

hehe guess i was way of the mark then!

It must be in an ODI therefore as I know for a fact that Arjuna scored our first 50 in a test match...

is it ok if i give multiple answers?

Wettimuny, Duleep Mendis or Madugalle?
You can give as many answers as you like !! :D :D

The cricketer in question played long before Sri Lanka got Test status . (over 20-30 years prior)

I wonder if you noted in the question , I never asked for "the First Sri Lankan to score a fifty against Australia in Test cricket " .

True. Sorry my mistake-for some reason I was thinking in a test cricket mindset.

I haven't really got any ideas. Can you give any more clues?

Was it C Balakrishnan?
No . It was long before "Balakrishnan" (I think Balakrishnan scored a 50 in the 70s against Bill Lawry's Team)

Much earlier .

Actually Your answer is correct.

It was C. Balakrishnan !!
The answer I had in mind was BR Heyn. But his fifty was scored against an Australian services XI in 1945(given below), and because it was not an Australian representative Team it does not count. So you are correct.
