Well it's probably desperately Anglocentric of me, but number of Ashes lost under Waugh: 0. :D

To take a more all-emcompassing view Oz very nearly came unstuck against the Banglas too, that doesn't scream invincible to me.

Yea, very nearly. Though they did beat SA 3-0 in SA right before that, and beat virtually every other country since then.

See thats the thing, people are always going to blame him for losing the Ashes. Its upto them on which series they consider the most important, but any captain in the world, and any population in the world, except Aus would take 11/12 any day of the week (perhaps England might not, but aside from that).

They aren't? Ponting has only lost one series so far, and drew none. Thats a better record than Waugh.
You're forgetting his personal series loss in India...

record-wise they are both good captains, tactically i wouldn't call either of them all that good....however comparatively...it's waugh for me...

Waugh. Sure, he inherited the groundwork of Tubby and Grumpy, but he did so much more on the mental side of the game and instilled a professionalism in his team that other sides have begun to emulate. He wasn't content with winning, preferring to completely dominate. As a result, run rates mushroomed under him (anything sub 4-an-over was considered inadequate), the opposition was routinely bowled out for sub-200 scores and there was a mental toughness and ruthlessness found in the Australian team of 1999-2004 that justifies Waugh's winning record.

I've always considered Ganguly a decent captain, but the biggest item on his resume is that he's survived two series against Australia at the height of their powers. Fair enough, but I always thought Azharuddin had more charisma as a captain.
