Battle of the Test captains

Ganguly was the greatest captain in Indian history. At least, he is definatly up there. But Waugh has a great winning percentage, so Waugh.

Waugh is the better captain, but you are underestimating what Ganguly meant to Indian cricket. He was like to India what Taylor was to Australia. Really, he was.

Agreed. I don't see why anyone would be sickened by a vote for Ganguly. However, I do believe Waugh was better, but not by leaps and bounds.

Really harsh on Ganguly who I personally credit with a great deal for the way he's pulled the Indian team together to seem more of a team than they did previously, but Waugh is a true great of captaincy.

I personally think this is actually quite a close call. I'm an absolutely huge fan of SRW, a supreme competitor & a splendid bloke too; he knew what being Australia's captain meant in a way the current incumbant fails to grasp. As a tactical captain tho I could never quite shake off the feeling he tended to be a bit over-cautious at times. He clearly liked to bat teams out of games & (to use a Benaudism) "close" the innings rather than declare. I can't think of any occasion when it cost him victory off the top of my head, but that may be at least partly due to the Arsenal at his disposal.

Ganguly, while possibly a less easy character to warm too, lead India to great success in the test arena & certainly had the better of their personal duels. Aside from the well-documented victories over Oz & Pakistan he also lead India to a drawn series over here, his team coming from behind to do so. That said, there seems to be no regression under Dravid thus far & Oz are certainly not quite the force they were under Waugh.

On that balance, it's SR Waugh for me, but only just.

They aren't? Ponting has only lost one series so far, and drew none. Thats a better record than Waugh.

Well it's probably desperately Anglocentric of me, but number of Ashes lost under Waugh: 0. :D

To take a more all-emcompassing view Oz very nearly came unstuck against the Banglas too, that doesn't scream invincible to me.
