Battle of the Test captains

This is not as clear cut as people are making out. Brearley was great in an academic way. Ive often thought that if he could bat his captaincy would not be so highly praised. No doubt he could get into players minds but he offered little else.

IIRC Illingworth is one of only 2 captains to regain the Ashes in Aus and had a very successful tour there.

He was **** as a selector and the few times I met him Ive not been that impressed. However, he was exceptional as England captain and if you want further proof, check out is ability to turn Leics into a powerhouse and how he returned to Yorkshire to lead them to their first trophy in donkeys.

Brearley was certainly excellent and a thinker but Illingworth was a winner.

Its a coin flip for me, but as everyone is doing Illingworth a disservice, Illingworth

I agree Goughy, this certainly shouldn't be a rout. The Aussie side Illys troops won against, were a far superior outfit then the one Brearleys lot did.

Brearley for me; although he did have the good fortunes to never captain against the Windies, to face an Australia denuded of the WSC players & to have Beefy & Bob at their peaks.

For the reasons articulated above.

Illingworth

Nothing against Brearley - but I believe he is a tad over-rated and a little fortunate considering the opposition he sometimes faced, and the quality of that opposition.

Brearley.

btw, some great photos here - the one of Worrell in particular is an absolute cracker.
