For the last time, stats aren't the full story... 8-)

They also had better teams to work with than those mentioned.
Winning records are certainly not the be all and end all when quality of captaincy is concerned, that is for sure. For example, Ricky Ponting has a much better winning record than Stephen Fleming but even the most casual observer would recognise that the Kiwi is a much more accomplished captain.

Having said that, anyone who has studied the subject of great captains in detail will accept the validity of my statement, Armstrong and Bradman were amongst the best captains ever to serve Australia. Take Bill Browns comments about Bradman 'He was the best tactical captain I ever played under. He knew all about the opposition batsmen, remembered things from previous matches, and placed his field accordingly. When the new ball was due the bowlers were rested and ready, he had a wonderful appreciation of the conditions. I would say that he just never missed a trick in the field.'

Oh and please inform my ignorant self about all those wonderful players who played under Armstrong, the like of which Simpson, Chappell and Taylor could only dream of. 8-)

Botham ... of course

Botham at his prime inspired a sense of wonder -- an embodiment of the excitement of what a fantastic sport cricket can be -- just by being on the field. No doubt Murali has taken heaps of wickets, but he's not the cricketer Botham was in his pomp.

Well, well, here comes the 21st vote with the score tied at 10-10.

And it goes to Murali . Not just for being a wonder spinner, but also for winning his biggest fight...against the chucking brigade.
Tough on Beefy, granted.
