Quite strange how much people underrate Benaud as a player... in part it's because of his average, but it's worth remembering how much batsmen sought to defend him in the era he played. His average is 2 runs higher than Warne's and his strike rate is almost 20 higher, but his economy rate is much, much lower. He also scored three test centuries and in the later stages of his career was a genuine all-rounder who was a genuine threat with the bat. Also stands alongside Chappell, Simpson and Taylor among Australia's best ever captains.

Benaud by an absolute mile.

Whatever it takes!!!
Token vote for Aravinda. He deserves atleast 3 votes. The guy was instrumental for his side winning a world cup. THAT deserves a bit of appreciation at the very least.

When discussing 'best ever' Australian captains, one should not forget to mention Bradman and Armstrong. Both had a much better winning percentage than any of those you mentioned and were held in awe by their fellow players.

Benaud.

Aravinda...did a great deal for SL cricket

Richie Benaud...I never had the pleasure of viewing as a player, but as a commentator, I think he's a bit overrated...for instance, yesterday, he called Hussey and Watson, the 2 great allround hopes of Australia.....Hussey????????

So, my vote goes to ARAVINDA

For the last time, stats aren't the full story... 8-)

They also had better teams to work with than those mentioned.

20-3 to Benaud. So we move onto the final battle of the round, and it's a cracker! (I'd prefer the word "chucker" not to come up). Sorry about missing last night guys, Spooks (fantastic show) and Homework came together and I forgot.

ROUND TWO ----- ----- BATTLE SIXTEEN

M Muralitharan (Sri Lanka) (RHB, OB)

IT Botham (England) (RHB, RFM)
