You know Australia could do far worse than Hartley as a keeper. He'll do about as well as Nevill with the bat and possibly a better job with the gloves.

I still think that Nevill needs a longer run though. It's not his fault that he's facing a ball that's only 25 overs old all the time.
haha it's never Nevill's fault

when he was coming in at 5/500 it wasn't fair because he didn't have enough of a bat
when he comes in at 5/100 it's not fair because he's coming in too early

I guess only the innings where he comes in between 5/220 and 5/250 should count when judging a keeper batsman

I'm not making excuses for Nevill, his batting isn't up to modem standards. However, he still might be the best keeper/batsman in the country.

nevill probably the best keeper, one thing that's not being noted is he still having a blip in keeping form, his keeping hasn't gone downhill, whereas wade is just a bad keeper (imo)

you can't drop the number 7 on the basis of slightly (maybe possibly) better batting returns without getting a top 6 at least somewhere near functional

Your keeper's the last person you wanna drop

The keeper's also the last person you want to see dropping.

Personally I think it's more the fact that there is nobody better.

He has got a fair crack mate in different situations and different conditions. Just hasn't grabbed his chances enough but I can understand them sticking by him on the above basis.

Maintain that Nevill should be in trouble for his stump mic work alone, his vocab consists of "C'mon boys." and "Bowling, [NICKNAME]". Nowehere near enough niggle. Unaustralian. Drop the prick.

A very valid point, as usual from T_C. Needs to take a blue pill and get more mongrel.

Look, we've seen once today what a Zimbabwean-born all-rounder who provides big hitz and military meds can do, so clearly we need to take a hint from our southern neighbours and pick Hilton Cartwright on principle.

1. David Warner
2. Matt Renshaw (#Hameed)
3. Usman Khawaja
4. Steve Smith *
5. Alex Doolan
6. Peter Handscomb +
7. Hilton Cartwright (#CdATG)
8. Joe Mennie
9. Adam Zampa
10. Mitchell Starc
11. Josh Hazlewood

Lock it in. Hire me, James Sutherland.

Cricket legend Neil Harvey has blamed bigger bats for the technical deficiencies of Australia's batsmen and implored selectors to take a punt on youth.

He described Australia's batting in their two Test losses to South Africa as pathetic and lamented their lack of application.

Asked on Friday what he thought their problem was, 88-year-old Harvey said "lack of technique".

He said he had never seen so many players getting hit in the head as in recent years and put that down to poor footwork.

"I think the main reason they are getting hurt is their first movement is playing forward all the time and once you play forward it's difficult to go back," Harvey said.

"But if you go back first and then forward, that's the way to play the game.

"But these days with the heavy bats - that drags them forward because they don't have to hit the ball any more.

"They just have to lean the bat on the ball and it goes for four or over the fence.

"To me, that's not cricket. That's taken a lot of the skill out of the game.

"I think those cricket bats they use today are the main blame for the lack of technique with batsmen."

Harvey made his Test debut at 19 and had no qualms about backing youth when he was a selector.

"I think the time has come when changes have got to be made," he said

"We've got to give the young blokes a bit of a go.

"I played for Australia when I was 19 and you can't tell me you are too young to play for Australia.

"For a lot of years they have not gone to young blokes.

"It's very very rare that you get blokes under 24 getting a go for Australia, and to my mind it's wrong"

Among the the emerging breed of batsmen Harvey would like to see get a chance at Test level are South Australian Travis Head, 22, who has already played ODIS and T20 internationals, and 23-year-old Kurtis Patterson of NSW.

Doolan looks in crazy form this year, plus the guy has made Test runs against South Africa. He dominated the Matador cup, a form of the game he'd never really been good at before. He could be peaking right now.

Jeez Neil Harvey is the most bitter ex cricketer ever. No one who played beyond 1961 isever any good.

For a bit of variety Neil Harvey bemoans how cricket and cricketers just ain't what they were in his day.

Harvey makes some valid points. The size of bats has increased dramatically in the past few years (Sobers made the same point not that long ago). Boundaries have been brought in until there's just no defending some grounds. The pitches in Australia and other places have been flat as a tack. Now there's been some movement off the wicket and only a couple guys showed any ticker.
