Australian Test Selection 2016/2017

I'm not as certain about that as you seem to be mate. There have always been blokes who've get earmarked from a young age, but there's a serious amount of anointing which goes on at junior level here. Once you're in that structure it's harder to get out of it than in tbh. Not saying that transposes to Shield level, but it does at State junior level and also with some clubs at lower grade level too.
I was talking specifically about Shield level. No question young identified talent gets a rails run below that which might still be too easy, but the idea that Doran could (or it was even in his best interest to) demand a Shield place at his age was always stupid. NSW obviously weren't biting.

don't often see some sensible analysis from Brett Geeves, even if it is just a reiteration of what everyone's being saying constantly for the last 5 years

Anyone else see all this as a massive overreaction though?

lose 2 series, all of a sudden the system's been broken for a decade. They were ranked no. 1 like 6 months ago lol.

Does that say more about Worrall or the state of swing bowling in this country? Think Behrendorff might be better on that front as well, although I've mostly seen white ball stuff from him.
I think he's good bowler (and he's gotten vastly better) but not good enough for internationals, even with the pink ball.
Don't worry, I'd love to see Worrall play. We need more sharply angled run ups in cricket these days. Modern straight ones might be good from a coaching standpoint but they are so uninteresting.
Worrall can genuinely swing it both ways at will. Not so Behrendorff, and from what I've seen he strays onto the pads way too often (recently at least).

Yeah Behrendorff is a better overall bowler than Worrall but the latter is definitely a better exponent of swing.

It was a pretty undeserved ranking. The Ashes whitewash and SA away series were quality, but not much before or since was worth a pinch. Towelling up the Indians, Lankans, Windies and Kiwis at home isn't really big news. Our away results have been mostly dire since 2005.

No, I see it as a reflection of where they're really at, rather than the cracks being papered over like they were last summer against two cod ordinary visiting sides. The batting is terribad. Has been for ages.

All will be fine in a few months if we beat Pakistan right. Because that's all CA will need to distract fans. Only home series count and this SA series will be seen as an anomaly where we were unlucky.

That's not my point. Yes the issues are there and have been for years, but it's the timing that's funny. All of sudden everything's horrible because they lost 2 series.

This ties in with the article Geeves wrote, and the discussion Vic & T_C were having about Second XI cricket yesterday.
Just read it - what a joke!

Pathways are obviously important as, amongst other things, you need to tie talented youngsters down to the sport asap because there is so much competition from other sports but you shouldnt just hand higher honours to them on a platter.

It's the way you lose which matters. These have been thumpings, in two cases from positions where even a modicum of competence would have seen their position made impregnable in the match (1st test in SL, first test here). It's been a performance worthy of an England sporting team - gutless and bereft; pallid and limp; gormless and wilting.

No, if you lose you do it with a SOK/ Nev-like effort on the last day in SL when they batted for ages and showed some balls. You don't roll over and get your tummy tickled like they have here. The whole #intent thing is actually far more reflective of the latter than the former, because you're just going to go on flailing away like a hapless water buffalo regardless of the outcome.

I know, that's why I made a sarcastic comment. It's alright being beaten by an XI with some very good bowlers in favourable conditions, it's when everyone decides to just go and get out rather than making an effort that is the real bugbear of this team, as has been discussed. Not only are we losing 7 or so wickets for a tiny amount of runs, it's happening very quickly in time as well. Nobody tries to resist for ages - even if it means playing maiden after maiden - like SO'K and Nev did in SL, and instead everyone just gets out playing shots as normal.
The attitude that playing to win and losing is better than getting away with a draw is infuriating and mystifying to me, but apparently deeply rooted in the Australian cricket psyche.

Whatever it takes!!!
Why do CA keep going back to Greg Chappell? Did they NOT learn from what happened when we let him control our cricket? He is a very divisive and more importantly, untrustworthy figure for players. And now he will be a selector. Go figure.

Maybe the guys at NSW know a bit? Young guys get chances here, but they gotta earn em, and then perform to stay.
It is a side effect of having your best few batsmen regularly in the Australian team - you get to give the young guys more of a look during the season than other states do as well.
