Australian Test Selection 2016/2017

The Futures League was a decent idea - it should have been a supplement to the 2nd XI rather than a replacement though.

Obviously I'm a dinosaur but unless things have radically changed since my day, more credence should be given to weight of performances at grade level than this pathway bs

Playing against men is/was simply different and generally harder than playing against kids your own age no matter how talented they might be.

Take Jake Doran as an example.

Everyone agrees that he is one of the most talented youngsters in world cricket but I was amazed to discover yesterday that he has only ever scored 1 first grade hundred.

IMO, there is no way in the wide world that he should have been guaranteed a spot in first class cricket (effectively what CA did) before dominating at grade level for at least a period of time and it comes as no surprise to me that he is now struggling

Worrall, on the other hand, has obviously had to work his arse off and that has translated into success at a higher level
Thing was Worrall was at Melbourne CC, only played one full season of First Grade cricket and South Australia swooped on him (he played a 2nd XI game towards the end of the season). So he came through the lower grades, but it's not like he beat the door down with 1st XI wickets.

So even if they weren't certain of dropping him before they now have a good reason to leave Voges out on medical grounds. Hope he is ok and not out for long. Good time for Handscomb to get a ton.

The Battlers Prince

International Vice-Captain
With what's been said by Waugh it sounds like someone with a good background like Handscomb could just shoot into the squad for Adelaide

Compton

International Debutant
Warner
Khawaja
Smith
Handscomb
Wade+
Ferguson
Maxwell
Marsh
Faulkner
Starc
Haze

There's no decent spin option so **** it, just bat deep.

Gob

International Coach
Can't believe likes of Bailey and Wade are being talked about again. There are so many good young batsmen playing around to be picked over tried and tested failures. I'd like to see something like

Warner
Bancroft
Khawaja
Smith
Patterson
Head
Neville

Tom Flint

International Regular
Warner
Khawaja
Smith
Handscomb
Wade+
Ferguson
Maxwell
Marsh
Faulkner
Starc
Haze

There's no decent spin option so **** it, just bat deep.
That could work, just replace handscombe with an opener and put khawaja and smith in their proper positions.

Tangles

International Vice-Captain
The video of Voges injury looks ugly. Seems like he didn't see it or didn't react because he just turns his head at the last minute. Hopefully he is ok. Makes me wonder with his Hobart 2 innings dismisal also being a short ball if age is catching up and he's seeing the ball later than he was. We shouldn't be picking him for Adelaide even if he's cleared IMO.

Compton

International Debutant
Wouldn't surprise me if the selectors see this as a chance to drop Voges without having to drop him tbh.

International Vice-Captain
Ponting and Vaughn on BT were both suggesting that a young bat when picked should be given a run of say 10 games, and be told this, to see how they handle the step up to Tests. So that would be the rest of the summer (4), India (5?) and one more. Not against it unless someone looks totally lost.

Handscomb
Wade+
Ferguson
Maxwell
Marsh
Faulkner

Why would you pick Marsh if he's injured and not playing current Shield match and has done nothing to prove form since being dropped? Doesn't make sense to me. I also don't think Faulkner's done anything to prove he's test quality recently. Would steer clear of both of them.

I feel only good can come out of these heavy losses.Stop papering over the cracks because we only lose away and a renewed focus on the Shield (hopefully).

Marsh hasn't shown he's improved his form as an all-rounder, but no one has questioned him in the side as a bowler.

You know Australia could do far worse than Hartley as a keeper. He'll do about as well as Nevill with the bat and possibly a better job with the gloves.

I still think that Nevill needs a longer run though. It's not his fault that he's facing a ball that's only 25 overs old all the time.
