    **Official** England in New Zealand 28 Nov-18 Dec 2024 - 3 Tests

The side doesn't need "balance", nor does it need people to be "under the age of 30". It needs runs and wickets. Will Young is more likely to score runs than either Phillips or Mitchell for what it's worth. Phillips' bowling is not likely to be used much in NZ conditions. I understand and...

Also I don't get it. Young is not exactly a super defensive Mark Richardson type and frankly even if he was is there any likelihood of a 5 day test match not getting a result barring weather? Strike rate is almost entirely irrelevant.

Why? Young is a better batsman than Phillips. As useful as Phillips' bowling has been, it's unlikely a part time offie is going to be of much consequence, particularly with Rachin also in the side +/- Santner.

Still think he's gonna be useful IMO.

Martin Guptill is someone who would have really benefited from Bazball, as opposed to thinking he needed to take technique lessons from Martin Crowe.

Am I crazy to suggest that - at least what I watched of the pitches - they didn't appear to be complete minefields to me? Like yes it was turning but not to the point where you just had to stick the ball somewhere and it would stay low or hiss and it would be utterly unplayable. People were...

I've been trying to put my finger on what exactly NZ did in this series. Because I really don't think it was a case of India playing terrible cricket. I mean, at times they did, but mostly they've played how they usually play. This Tom Latham quote has the morsel for me: I think that kinda...

Absolutely gun captaincy from Latham not to panic and keep bowling the two most likely wicket takers. He got his fields mostly pretty right too. I don't know why people were being critical of Phillips. Thought he was bowling well throughout. A feature of this series is that the bowlers...

Will O’Rourke would take wickets if there's a bit in the pitch for fast bowlers. So yes, insurance. Sodhi is not more likely to take wickets than Phillips or Rachin in my opinion. Nor is he likely to be less expensive.

Not bowling Sodhi is 100% the right move and good captaincy. Not selecting him would have been better.

Really it's Rachin who should have been bowling ahead of Phillips and Sodhi IMO

Has there ever been a point in which Sodhi has looked to be test standard?

One suspects Southee would also be the most capable of bowling a miserly wicket-to-wicket spell holding up an end for Ajaz. Don't know if Henry or O'rourke really possess that skill, and none of the other spinners really have it either.

Nah this is the type of position from which the bowling coach can come up with a very concise plan with Latham et al to execute. We're in an excellent position here. On this pitch Ajaz just needs someone at the other end with some semblance of pressure. Whether that turns out to be my pick...

This series has been so weird because despite the bowlers regularly taking wickets and winning periods, the batsmen have still been able to consistently rotate the strike and score runs.
