Group C - West Indies, Afghanistan, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Uganda

They did a match thread for this one. Agree, it would have felt wrong for Windies to bow out in a home tournament. Probably the last hurrah for a lot of the Black Caps in limited overs WC's. Hopefully they will look to bring in some of the guys who did well in Pakistan on a more regular basis to...

Match #26- West Indies vs New Zealand (N)- Brian Lara Cricket Academy, Tarouba, T&T- June 12th-- Group C

In terms of overall World Cups also didn't get out of the group stage in 1987 or 1983. In 87 we squeaked past Zimbabwe but lost to Aus and India. Haven't checked the 75 and 79 editions.

Match #26- West Indies vs New Zealand (N)- Brian Lara Cricket Academy, Tarouba, T&T- June 12th-- Group C

Bracewell's development XI would have fared better. At least this probably draws a line to rejuvenate the T20 squad as a lot of these guys won't be at the next tournament.

Match #26- West Indies vs New Zealand (N)- Brian Lara Cricket Academy, Tarouba, T&T- June 12th-- Group C

Heinrich Malan would be good too imo. Will be interested to see how that new Otago coach goes.

Match #26- West Indies vs New Zealand (N)- Brian Lara Cricket Academy, Tarouba, T&T- June 12th-- Group C

See Stead and Kane have wielded the axe. Southee, Ravindra and Neesham in for Henry Bracewell and Chapman.

Most unceremonious exits from international cricket

Martin Crowe, IIRC wanted to only be available for tests given his chronic knee problem but was told he had to be available for all matches so retired without any farewell. Made a brief comeback aged 49 but got injured again although did have a showdown with a then little known Lockie Ferguson...

Saw that. One of the only times I can recall Hesson criticising his successor?

Group C - West Indies, Afghanistan, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Uganda

The reason given was for players to spend time with their families. Which must be a huge challenge with the increasingly congested calendar. But you wonder how other teams who have similar numbers or more in IPL managed to get some warm up matches. And as you say a number of the players like...

Group C - West Indies, Afghanistan, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Uganda

Maybe they thought the top 3 in the group progressed so the first two games could double as warm ups for the must wins against Uganda and PNG.

Is Mitch Hay's glovework pretty good? He must be coming into contention soon. Allen is probably better than Conway with the gloves too imo.

Players whose reputation during their career was an inaccurate reflection of how good they really were

True, his all-round stats over a 166 test career (batting ave ~55 and bowling ~32) are freakishly good. By way of comparison Stokes averages ~35 with the bat and ~32 with the ball.

Bad cricketers who played too long

He probably did (in this Pringle appreciation thread some suggest he wasn't quite test class) although he was effective when recalled for the test series against the West Indies in 1991 and had an excellent 92 World Cup taking 3 for 22 in the final - with a bit of luck could have had Miandad lbw...

Leading players who had a disability etc (e.g. Len Hutton's arm)

Lawrence Rowe was allergic to grass.

Bad cricketers who played too long

Unless the objection is that racial discrimination should have no place in selection (a complex topic when there has been historical discrimination against a given group). If it's on the basis you are missing good players as a result a better argument would be Kevin Pietersen, Devon Conway, or...

Young players who failed to realise their potential

Mohammad Zahid. Took 11 wickets on debut against NZ. Lara apparently rated him the fastest he had faced at the time. Akhtar thought Zahid was faster than him. Only played 5 tests after back problems derailed his career...

Bad cricketers who played too long

Because he was obviously class. McMillan said in his book that Vincent was the most talented shot maker in the side (I'll have to double check this after work).

    Your favourite photographs with cricketers

In 2014 I got pics with Hadlee and Gavaskar who was commentating on the India tour to NZ. Other ones are Martin Crowe at his book launch for 'Raw', Grant Elliot and Phil Simmons (at the Basin when he was here in 2020 as Windies coach).

Anderson to end Test career this summer

Maybe if that was the world record but otherwise no.
