    NZ domestic season 2023/24

Mason Hughes is an architect. Apparently when the selector contacted him he thought it was about adding an extension to his house. Manawatū’s Hughes one of three new faces on CD contract list | Stuff

    NZ domestic season 2023/24

That's cool to see a few guys from the under 19 WC squad getting contracts (Cam Paul was meant to be vice captain but got injured before the tournament). Schreuder seemed like a handy left armer with shades of Neil Wagner. Debuted for ND towards the end of the season. Then you have a stalwart...

How is Allan Border remembered as a captain?

That sounds fantastic. It seemed quite a big deal in the 90's when they set an academy at Lincoln following the success Australia had churning out top players from their academy. I don't think it ever worked out as well though and if anything set back a number of bowlers with the concrete surface.

Not sure if it was the last time but the one off test against India in 1994 was great. Fleming's debut which I was fortunate enough to see live. His back leg seemed to be trembling from nerves before he punched this beautiful cover drive for four to get off the mark. Was at the end of the season...

    Billy Ibadulla has passed away

Sad news. Ken Rutherford sang his praises in his book. Was a revered figure by all accounts.

Quite a good list of promising players who missed contracts, including Smith. https://archive.is/BxuW0

Yeah, would have been interesting to see who would have missed out if Kane had accepted his offer.

Sensible given his batting struggles last season. Will potentially have more international commitments too.

The FINAL- South Africa vs India (D), Kensington Oval, Barbados-- June 29th

Just waking up to the result. Condolences to SA fans (can empathise knowing how painful the 2019 WC final result was). Congratulations to India. Glad that Kohli performed well in his last T20 match. Bumrah is an ATG. A worthy final between two excellent sides.

Match 52# Afghanistan vs Bangladesh: Do or die for the Afghans

Bangladesh won the under 19 WC in 2020. Must have some guys coming through.

Match 52# Afghanistan vs Bangladesh: Do or die for the Afghans

It happens in cricket too but usually in more subtle ways 🤣

    Best Cordons

Funny, reading this thinking "yeah, he was probably the best slipper I've seen too" while watching Cricket Gold highlights. Next minute Graeme Hick edged one off McDermott and Waugh spilled it. Maybe the first one I've seen him drop.

This has been remedied to an extent in part due to injuries and perhaps Wells coming in as a selector. O'Rourke, Sears, Ravindra have all stepped up pretty well across all formats. Others like Ashok, Foxcroft, Robinson, Clarkson and Foulkes have had some brief opportunities. I think next season...

    Cricket books

Speaking of the tours the Carribbean, Frances Edmonds (at the time wife of Phil Edmonds) wrote an entertaining account of the 1986 England tour. Roland Fishman's Calypso Cricket covering the 1991 Australian tour is also good.

Aside from 81/82 season - dismissed for 7 ducks including 4 in a row.

Group C - West Indies, Afghanistan, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Uganda

I'd say it's more like Ireland losing to Fiji and the Wallabies. I mean to an extent there are calls for Stead to be replaced (on here and on cricket Facebook groups anyway). He's only got a year to go on his contract so will probably continue although they will presumably be looking to shoulder...

Match #26- West Indies vs New Zealand (N)- Brian Lara Cricket Academy, Tarouba, T&T- June 12th-- Group C

Yeah, their bowling was fantastic (fielding kind of let us off the hook a couple of times). I thought the dewy conditions would make life hard for the spinners but they Motie in particular was outstanding. A lot depends on whether Stead's contract gets renewed in mid-2025 :-) I guess it is...
