Which player's spot in the Pakistan test team is the safest?

They can all be dropped depending on their performance (on a very rigorous selection interview process, akin to the one shown below for law firm interviews).

*Official* New Zealand tour of India 2024

Hmm think India's chances are pretty slim tbh, more like 90-10, if rain doesn't play spoilsport. India have a good enough attack to pull it off, but Siraj seemed a bit of a wastrel in the first innings (to be fair, everyone was put under the cosh), and new ball wickets are going to be absolutely...

*Official* New Zealand tour of India 2024

I'm not going to pretend that Sarfaraz is a classical marvel of a Test batsman, but his play has a brutality, and straightforwardness all it's own. Will be good to watch for many years.

    Virat Kohli vs Gordon Greenidge

Very interesting. Kohli loses most ATVG Test bat comparisons. With opener tax how exactly is Greenidge behind Kohli? Both had great peaks too.

The 4th Greatest Wicket keeper Batsman?

Pant and Rizwan are both good modern shouts. Like Clyde Walcott for an old schooler.

    Waqar Younis vs James Anderson

Can go either way here. Absolute opposite ends of the peak vs longevity argument.

    Allan Donald vs James Anderson

Good move to avoid the hard r there. Should definitely be taken as a modicum of decency for those of us advocating for ***.

    Over-rates yawn

Honestly, no holes with this I can see, although captains and players (especially of the old guard of current players) will whinge a fit. It more or less is a neccessary fix to "save" Test cricket.

    Jacques Kallis vs Ricky Ponting

Kalis being massively underrated here. He has slightly superior to Sachinesque averages over a not that much shorter time frame, something Ponting can't hope to touch. Even acknowledging Punter's superior destructive peak, I can't use that to take this away from Kallis.

Hit the ball twice - why is it a mode of dismissal.

I already knew why this existed, have just always been somewhat taken aback by how barbaric our species was at one point that a close in fielder would have been seen as little more than a fleshy obstacle hindering the path of a corrective second swing of the bat ( or 3rd or 4th, etc.)

Bowling All Rounders or Batting All Rounders +

Actually agreed. One is more rare, the other bringing more value at the upper end Test skill level. And ultimately it's team context dependent which is the more "important" of the 2 for a given team. I just find the arguments about them just tired and over-worn at this point.

    Matthew Hayden vs Younis Khan

More examples of why CW is always wrong.

Bowling All Rounders or Batting All Rounders +

    Oh God, this again.

The decline of the part-time medium pacer

Out of all given reasons in the thread, I think this one is best and most explanatory of the phenomenon. I would personally add an increase in the overall quality of Test batting and bowling, including a further specialization of the disciplines as well. Teams trying hard to "moneyball" with...

Who will score the next triple hundred in Test Cricket in the 2020's ?

Hope no one took a punt on this.

Who will score the next triple hundred in Test Cricket in the 2020's ?

We're already mostly through 2024, and there's only like another 5 years to go in the 2020s, maybe it won't happen at all this decade? I wonder how what odds I could get on a wager like that? 🤔
  17. shortpitched713

Who will score the next triple hundred in Test Cricket in the 2020's ?

In all seriousness, I think there are less opportunities where it is good to go for / less harmful due to the more recent trend of lower scoring games. 1st innings pitches also can be a bit spicier. I think when it happens next it will be in the second innings (second team's first innings)...

Jacques Kallis vs AB de Villiers

Nah, AB was a wicket keeper in about 1/5 of the Test matches he played in, 24 out of 114. I sometimes put a bit of a flag against people who select him as a WK in something like a draft, because although capable, he really didn't play there much throughout his career, and opened in about as many...
