All Rounders Poll - Discussion

Maybe wicket-keepers bats after this? (Although I'm not aware when the last time it was done)
Wicket-keeper polls can be controversial at times. Do we purely judge them as keeper/batsmen (Gillie, Sanga etc)? What happens to the classic keepers whose skills are a step above others (Oldfield, Tallon etc)?
I tried this once before and interest waned after the first dozen or so. Perhaps I'll try again but which comes first - batting ability or keeping skills?
Is it 50:50 or some other ratio? This would need to be established.

I was wondering how far we should go with this poll. We have 22 names already with about a dozen genuine contenders still gaining nominations. With Barlow added to the list, despite a relatively low WPM (1.33), there must definitely be a case for other batting all-rounders who were more than useful bowlers but who have low WPM stats.
Should we stop at 30 names or try for 40?
Should have stopped at 15 I think.

I always thought of Richie Benaud as a #8 bat so surprised to see he batted top 6 in nearly a 3rd of his innings (30 of 97). He should have stayed #8 though where he averaged a decent 33.56

I guess keeping gets 60 and batting 40
Sangakkara only kept 48/134 Tests... 35% of Tests
AB kept 24/114... just 21% of Tests

going by this I guess players like Healy and Marsh will outclass them due to their keeping skills... not sure how to rate exactly.... a poll would do good with different opinions. also the absense of stats for wicket keeping makes it further difficult to judge pre Knott players atleast.

Yeah, agree with this.

@Line and Length Go for it imo.

I am not imposing modern standards, but I go for 40-60. Evans is an ATG, but I am not taking him an actual playing XI over Saha.
Understandable. But don't think their batting gap is large enough to overcome the wicket-keeping gap. Evans batted in much lower scoring tests, and my XI is gonna have great batters anyway.
And I rate Saha's keeping around equal to Jayawardene, both of whom will be lucky to make into my top 15 wicket keeper's list.

You are over selling their keeping gap imho. Ofcourse Evans is better, but I think the difference in their primary in a practical match will be all but negligible. And also, Saha quite underperformed in Tests. He was knocking on team India early 2010s as a batsman, but later worked on his keeping much more when he saw an opportunity to be Dhoni's successor. Was the first centurion in an IPL Final; and this one, it's still one of the best non International innings I have ever watched (though haven't watched too many):

The build up to this innings was also fantastic. Saha was injured and Patel came in for him and scored some quality runs. Now once fit, it became a question who will play. Then there was this Irani Cup Final match in which both did, and Saha secured his spot in absolute style.

By 40-60, did you mean 40 for keeping and 60 for batting?
