What the **** was that from Shanto? Bizarre attempt at a front foot defence with his legs stretched out like he's doing warrior pose in hatha yoga. Appalling batting.

We obviously have such a passion for rugby in this country and had a few dual ones like Roy McLean, Eddie Barlow, Peter Kirsten, Herschelle Gibbs that stand out. AB, Kallis & Boucher also had a strong rugby passion.

In terms of hockey? Who are our guys?
Trevor Madsen, Jonty Rhodes & now Tristan Stubbs & Kyle Verreynne? Benkenstein & Tsolekile too.
Russell Endean but that's going way back to the 50's ..
Mandy Yachad was quite a good hockey player though only played once for SA , AB De Villiers and Reeza Hendricks played some hockey at high school ..Phehlukwayo was very talented at hockey ..
You pick up things in these stick , bat and raquet sports that can be used in cricket.
I heard Quinton De Kock growing up wanted to be a baseball player.

Indeed. I knew there were more hockey guys.

Quinnie was even thinking of going to USA I believe. Another baseball player was Lee Irvine.

Could that region be somewhere where there's more emphasis on hockey? It's certainly not as big a hotbed for rugby as other parts of the country are.
Quite possibly although whilst they are quite passionate about rugby just like the English-speaking schools in CT, it's just that the Afrikaans-speaking are just historically superior 🤣

I noticed SACS are number one hockey school in SA at the moment. The top Cape Town schools have got a few of the successful Langa township boys who seem to have taken to hockey which is nice to see.

Bangladesh eating nicely into the deficit.

Much rests on this partnership if they want to try and make us chase over a 100 which is their ideal scenario now you would think.

Thanking you, Squiddo.

I purposely omitted the ***Official*** tag in the title as I imagine it might actually be easier to spot the thread without it.
Well I see someone has undermined my good idea and put the *Official* tag in the title anyway. Such is the lot of the guy who has the best ideas in the room.

I tuned in to the first session and it was a stunner, with Kyle's sweep shot stealing the show. It's a rare gem in today's game, and Kyle dusted it off and shone it to its full glory. It's like finding an old vinyl in the attic and discovering it's a classic hit!

Athar, as usual, yammering on about shot selection and "choosing the right ball to hit", claiming it was impetuous batting that cost us a lot of wickets. No, it was mostly piss poor technique from substandard batsman. With a few bad shots as garnish.

Piedt has been disappointing, although it is not uncommon in his career that people go after him.
The problem is Peidt isn't actually good enough at international level. Particularly not against subcontinent batsmen. He is a decent FC spinner, but not going to threatening in general at international level.

As I stated earlier in the thread, he is a big step down from Harmer. He bowls some wicket taking deliveries but its what he produces inbetween that is the problem.

This is where you want Nortje or Coetzee to bring some high pace.
The problem is that our batting has been so poor that Conrad has felt the need to shore it up by having Mulder at No.8 recently, even in this test we found ourselves at 108/6, had we not had Mulder at no.8 would have probably been bowled out for 150 and then we'd be in big trouble. We don't have another quick in because our specialist batsmen have constantly let us down , there is no confidence to go in with 5 proper bowling options because we can collapse to anyone.

Agreed. It's just that if you go in with four bowlers and two spinners, both of your spinners need to be dependable. Unfortunately Piedt hasn't shown that sort of control.
