So where are we at with the fact that the team, coach and management who are doing everything wrong are on a massive high having won two of the best tests of all time back to back? Like, we obviously pretty much still suck and I think CW understands that, but this is massively unhelpful on that front

Wagner with the winning wicket in Wellington.

Then after 0* off 0 when severely injured gets the winning run in Chch.
Thankfully it seems likely that it’ll be taken out of his hands this time. Barring a bunch of injuries he won’t get picked for the Bangladesh tour, and by next summer hopefully a few of the younger prospects like Sears and Smith will be fit and ready to step up.

Cricinfo commentary suggests a very high number of plays and misses to the extent that ordinarily more wickets would have fallen. I deeply distrust the way their commentators describe things though
The whole test felt like that for both sides. Could’ve easily been a 200 average innings score test.

This would be New Zealand's second highest run chase at home if successful. The highest run chase was 317 against Pakistan in 1994 at the old AMI stadium in Christchurch ..Shane Thomson got 120 off 167 in the 4th innings his only test hundred , against prime Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis imagine .
One of the best tests ever played in this country (even if you feel Pakistan we’re phoning it in a little on account of being 2-0 up in the 3 match series).

Man, only watched the first 5 minutes and already 2 dropped chances and some embarrassing misfields. I’d totally forgotten that NZ were a shambolic fielding side until Rixon told them “Look if your going to be **** at batting and ok at bowling your going to have be ****ing brilliant in the field if you want to stand a chance.”

Commentators (notably Doull during the WTC final when he was having a huge go at Jurgensen) have implied/stated the team runs itself atm. It would explain the steel to win mixed with the insane selection.

That's not really enough though. A strong coach and support crew can take a team to another level.

I have a feeling reality will be denied until Australia and South Africa slap us around next summer. Every team has a life expectancy, and you need fresh injections to keep standards up. We would not have won the WTC without Conway and especially Jamieson. KJ made every bowler play for their spot every game.

No one was stopping that NZ side in those conditions, maybe not even Australia. Internal competition pushed our B team to wipe the floor with England. Many of those same players are now playing shithouse.

Nah. Was test cricket all the way. Our batting effort was very much ‘only attack when it’s almost impossible for us to lose’.

tbf was mostly a really fantastically paced and low-risk chase until it got crazy towards the end
Yeah I was only being cheeky. A fantastic match as one the last one v England. Both games amongst the best ever played and not be be forgotten by history.

Feeling a little for SL. Played really well all test, kept fighting back from tough situations only to lose last ball despite a heroic direct hit (Asitha WAFG) . Mood must suck in their dressing room right now.

Really hope these two extremely close wins vs england and SL don't let the issues in the NZ squad slide under the rope. They've 2 of their 4 frontline bowlers aren't test standard, their fielding a #7 who would struggle to get in at #8 in most teams and they have a non existant #4. Hopefully they choose to experiment a bit in the second test of the NZ-SL game, get phillips/Chapman in at #4, bring in a toole or a shipley over tickner, maybe try a foxcroft/mcconchie over bracewell. If NZ patch over the holes they've got the tools to be the best team in the world or right up there.

There is no way NZ take that chase on pre Bazball, or even pre the Wellington win. That win was worth 2 wins and counting.

We didn't chase at 6 an over all day, it was just fairly normal batting until we had a crack in the final session, which has been normal for most teams for years now.
NZ wouldn't have chased this before Misbah's Pakistan cracked the code
