So the grapevine is that almost all test players apart from Rohit and Rahul will skip the T20I leg of the NZ series. And in turn, I guess Rohit and Rahul will miss the test series against NZ. This, I think, should be our template for T20I line up.
1, Anchor type opener (Rohit)
2. Aggresive opener who is also the keeper (Ishan/Rahul)
3. Anchor cake batsman (Virat)
4. Batsman who can score quickly against spin and in the middle overs (SKY/Shreyas)
5. Batsman who can score fast and bowl (no readymade options - Dube/Shankar were tried - Sundar worth a go in ths role)
6. Batsman who can score fast and bowl (Hardik)
7. Batsman who can score fast and bowl (Jadeja)
8. Bowler who can hit a long ball (Shardul)
9. Bowler who can hit a long ball (Deepak Chahar)
10. Specialist Bowler (Bumrah)
11. Specialist Bowler (Chahal/Varun)
Going by this structure, I guess Rohit, Rahul and Ishan pick themselves. SKY and Shreyas as well. That #3 spot is interesting, but I am assuming we will see Ruturaj Gaekwad come in there. That is 6 players for 4 slots. We will get another 10 for the remaining 7 slots, I think. I am not sure of the fitness of any of the 3 I mentioned there as contenders for this slot. And I think it is likely we will see Venkatesh Iyer slot in here, with Hardik maybe getting one more shot to stay with the side and improve his fitness and see if he can bowl a bit more. Krunal should come in for the Jaddu slot. Harshal Patel and Deepak Chahar should be two of the seamers, along with maybe Natarajan who can join Rahul Chahar and Varun as the pure bowlers. The backup fast bowlers could be Prasidh Krishna and Avesh Khan.
My squad and 11 -
Rohit
Rahul (backup - Ishan)
Ruturaj
SKY (backup - Shreyas)
Venky
Hardik
Krunal (maybe Dube as backup??)
Harshal ( backup - Prasidh)
Deepak
Rahul (backup - Varun)
Natarajan (backup - Avesh)
I feel we can even blank the NZ side with this lineup. We are the bilateral kings*, afterall.
* - Plz dont call it a cup or championship or we will start losing these too.
