I think this idea of ATG only exists on this forum, and to the average Indian fan he will be second only to Tendulkar, so I doubt he gives a toss

Second overall maybe but not in Tests.
Even an avg Indian knows where he stands in Test Cricket.
Players do care about their standing in the history of cricket. If Kohli didn't care, he would never have prioritised Test cricket in the first place. He is on record saying that players are judged by what they accomplish in test cricket. So obviously he cares. It's just that he isn't as good as before or as focused as before and hence the diminished results.
