Whatever it takes!!!
Amazingly, a guy who is playing without any breaks is Rahul. Hope he retains his batting rhythm and form. If he gets in on some of the true and bouncy RSA wickets, it can make for some amazing viewing.

Sad state of affairs if key players are ok with being rested against the number one team in the world. You'd imagine they'd be chomping at the bit to get back at the kiwis after being routinely humiliated at their hands in the recent past. Anyway, Bumrah and Shami were probably surplus to requirements if the pitch trend from the Eng series continues, but Sharma and Pant are good guarantees in case of a collapse. NZ should be slightly offended for being underestimated (again) but at the same time this might be as good chance as any to snag an ambush win in India.

Nah man. The schedule has been brutal on them.

Yeah its a sad state of affairs that its been this brutal of a schedule that they'd rather miss the tests vs the number 1 team they lost the WTC final to than rest themselves in the two gully cricket tournaments. Not as though this schedule snuck up on them. We were saying its going to be a shitshow for months now.

Hope you realise, players can't skip IPL due to BCCI pressure.

IPL sux but pays for everything etc but genuinely a test series at home is the "safest" time to take a rest. Win probability doesn't go down as much.

Exactly. BCCI won't let them skip IPL. Otherwise how has no Indian cricketer ever skipped any season of IPL? When they skip tests, they still get their full retainer fee. Can similar arrangement be made for paying cricketers IPL fee even if they want to skip at least some portions of it?

**** BCCI. Hope India loses this series.

Even when they are mentally exhausted from six months of bubble and travel? **** BCCI if that's how they think. Dubai leg of IPL was completely unnecessary. Cricketers turned into zombies by the time t20 World Cup came.

IPL's value comes from the Indian stars playing in it. Paying them without playing is not a solution.
Commercial value? Yeah of course but err, who cares? And even if some of the stars sat out I doubt viewership will suddenly collapse.

In terms of value to Indian cricket, it comes from its ability to unearth young talent. 30+ year old all format veterans playing every game is not what is needed. It is particularly bad this time because of the crazy schedule this year. There's no need for the IPL to be that long in normal years but in a Dubai season its ridiculous.

Nobody is going to touch IPL because every political party has major stake in it directly or indirectly .

Like I didn't know that ?

My issue is with the fact the cricketers don't have a choice. If they were completely free to decide what they can skip, I expect half of the contracted cricketers would have chosen to skip IPL despite the money.
Somehow, I highly doubt that.

If they really wanted to, I'm sure they could have rested one more series down the line that isn't as important. The NZ series is short anyway, and at home.
To rest vs NZ, whom we do need to convincingly beat (from a test purists perspective), suggests they themselves don't consider it of that much relative importance.

And let's face it - I'm sure they CAN reject the IPL (and the money that goes with it) if they really want to. Pant, as far as future of Indian cricket goes, is a pretty powerful figure - a potential generational talent. He can say **** that ****. What are they going to do? Play old man Saha in his place all the time? KL who doesn't keep in tests? Ishan Kishan who blows hot and cold and isn't suited for tests anyway?
Same goes for someone like Bumrah.

But they want the money. 100%.

My take is that at the end of the England tour most of them probably still felt like they had enough in the tank to go on and prepare for the WT20 by playing the IPL, without thinking too far forward re the NZ series. Of course, the monetary incentives probably helped make that decision a lot easier.

After they embarrassed themselves at the WT20, one of the points Shastri made was that they've been completely exhausted by the schedule. There's probably been some sort of a captain hindsight review of it, and management/BCCI has encouraged, offered and/or made it easier for people to take a break.

Having said that, if the players could do the whole thing over again with the benefit of hindsight, I'm still honestly not convinced they'd choose to skip the IPL.
