I'd seriously consider taking Duckett to Bangladesh and India as a middle order bat/ reserve opener.

He's a really good, very attacking player of spin. Seems to judge length very quickly and has all the shots. More suspect against pace and a bit loose to open - and I wouldn't think of him as a serious option yet for non asian tours.

If the wickets are low scoring, quick turners in India Duckett imo has the capability of scoring a match defining innings- moreso than a Bairstow, Stokes, Vince, Hales, Bell imo. Notice today the trademark recent Bell in Asia knock for Warwickshire - 19 off 100 balls - Just super defensive trash.

Two knocks from Duckett which have really impressed me were

The Home of CricketArchive Came in after early wickets in a high pressure game and played with brilliant conviction from the off especially against the spin. Only 61 but this was the most non English in Asia u19 knock you're likely to see.
The Home of CricketArchive Complete destruction of a decent Pakistan a attack. Just manipulated the spinners so easily with complete control.

Of decent importance also is that he has started making big runs in championship cricket. The quality of the attacks he faces is obviously variable and generally mediocre but he's batted some long periods now rather than just cameos. You're not going to face much or any quality spin in county cricket div 2 (or even div 1 for the most part) so picking anyone is going to be a gamble but Duckett for me has the game that could be successful and is well suited to facing spin.

My money is on him being the long term number 4 for England. Haseeb, Cook, Root, Duckett,.....

It is a statement innings from Duckett, not just because it's clearly pretty immense, but it's off an incredible breakout season. Look at how Borthwick is kinda limping over the line this year.

He should definitely go, I think they will stick with Hales and Ballance so doubt he will start in the side but suspect he will be in it come the end of the India series.

Obviously the pitch helped a lot but there's a lot more momentum and a bigger pivot in that action than I remember from him. Admittedly he probably bowls a bit differently in limited overs cricket in general which is where I've seen him.

Didn't Moeens serious bowling career start after one freakish bowling performance at about the same age? Who knows, a 9fer shouldn't be sniffed at even if there are Welsh people involved in the wickets.

Heard on TMS on the way home that Wagg was bowling offies in Northampton. So that's where that pitch is at.

Yorkshire bowlers bailing out the batsmen in all innings again.

Must be one of our youngest opening partnerships in history with Rob Jones opening with the great wall, good to see another former U19 player coming through.

Taking Hameed and Duckett would be something else and a massive gamble but very exciting... but a massive gamble (again) from a normally risk averse selection setup.

I don't they'd necessarily score less than the alternatives but do the selectors want to run the risk of a bad series which could set them back a long while mentally - or exposing a player too early with part of his game underdeveloped (rather than letting them develop that out of the spotlight say on a lions tour) which stunts their long term development.

Tough choices. I think I said somewhere else they'll possibly go one experienced callup (Malan, Northeast, Robson, Hildreth) and one youngster ( Duckett, Hameed,...).

Going back to Bell and I just hate his mental approach in recent years. Seems to almost be obsessed with crease occupation against the spin, and inevitably inviting pressure. Complete opposite of Root. Unable to keep the scoreboard moving. Technically fine, mentally defunct. Hopefully his 19 off 100 ended any chance of him returning this winter.

I'd rather take Duckett, this is his 3rd season I think compared to Hameed's first, and he is smashing it in all formats which gels with the idea he is coming into his own as a cricketer and not just to having a good average this season.

Yeah, not sure why we're talking about Duckett and Hameed together. Think Duckett has to go because he can easily slot in the middle-order, he becomes cover for all our problem batting areas. Don't really see that with Hameed, too young for that really, just an opener at present.

Edit: Don't really get that the selectors are risk-averse nowadays though, in the end we have a lot of new cricketers in all-forms, we could easily have kept plodding along with Bell, but they give them a chance and then try to look for something better. All the openers, rather than settling for mediocrity. They're really bold for English selectors, and for many other countries too.

Yeah I'm usually pretty conservative with these things but I think the idea that Duckett isn't experienced enough to be rather silly, for basically the reasons you outlined. It would have been nice if he'd played Division 1 cricket this season or some FC cricket for the Lions previously, but three full seasons is enough experience if you believe in a player, particularly when two of those seasons have been awesome and he's been doing it in all formats.

Too soon for Hameed though IMO.

Letting Wheater going to Essex at this stage of the season is weird. Sure he wants to keep so letting him go at the end of the season is fair enough but not now, even stranger when Foster will still be keeping at Essex. Wonder what has gone on there.

Bad collapse today, were really in the game at one point.
