Jesse!

So the NZ batsman:

McCullum -146 in this match
Guptill - 195* back home
Williamson - 284* back home
Taylor - 138 in this match
Ryder - 100* in this match
Brownlie - 171 back home

So they're all in some sort of nick. :)

Haha what? Isn't it already well established that Copeland does take wickets when he bowls lots of overs? Hence his high WPM ratio? Ridiculous assertion on your part.
It's not absurd at all. Bowlers with better strike rates take wickets when they bowl lots of overs too.

Copeland has had an excellent Shield career to date and appears to have been selected for NSW at the exact right time based on his stellar performances in Sydney Grade Cricket. Starc got chosen early in Shield Cricket and is an improved performer.

Cricketers do not get selected in the Australian team solely for their career record in Shield Cricket. I've given the example of Adam Dale. There are other players too like Joe Dawes who build fantastic Shield records but don't get selected much for Australia.

The selectors don't want a medium pacer in our 4 man attack. They don't have the confidence that he'll be able to step it up and take many wickets in Test match Cricket.

Obviously they feel as though the players chosen have better attributes to succeed in the pinnacle of the sport. Time will tell.

To the Copeland fans/everyone, what type of Test Cricketer would you expect him to be if given the opportunity? Would he have a high wickets per match rate in Test Cricket? Would his economy rate be superb? What do you think he would potentially average?

I never said anything to the opposite effect.

You're missing the fact that Copeland takes more wickets than the other bowlers on a game to game basis and he concedes fewer runs in doing so. That he takes slightly longer is the only down side.
You say in a 5 man attack you can have him keep it tight while the others take wickets, it's st00pid. He keeps it tight and takes wickets at the same time, that's kind of the point.

Basically I disagree with basically everything you're saying and your logic is flawed :)
I'm not missing that fact at all mate. Taking wickets in Shield Cricket is not taking wickets in Test Cricket.

Australian Test Cricket is not moneyball. We don't pick the 11 Cricketers with the best career statistics, no country does and rightly so.

As an NZ fan, I'm glad there's no Copeland around. He sounds like the sort of guy who can be deadly on a seamer, and tie us down on flatter pitches to the point where we throw our wickets away against him or the guy at the other end works us over.

Debut this lot playing today please.:)
