Did you actually see Shearer in his prime?During Shearer's "world class" phase with Blackburn he couldn't hit a barn door with England and made little to no impact on Europe.
Great Premiership striker who IMO never proved himself at the highest level, for club or country.
What's going on Ikki? First you say I make a good point. Then, when I've used numbers to make an argument, you use the 'watched him play' routine. Pretty scared tbhDid you actually see Shearer in his prime?
If you think about it; what's more remarkable about Shearer's scoring rate in Newcastle, for instance, is that he didn't really have a great midfield behind him. If he had moved to United when they came calling I think this would be even less of a debate than it already is.

Bizarrely horrific scoring record for the Republic tho. If memory serves he took about 20 games to get off the mark. It's why Aldo is the king, did very little in a lot of games, put the ball in the net though
This phase was right in the middle of his epic streak for Blackburn. He scored 30 goals in 63 internationals, that's hardly failing for his country, is it?
He of course did go through a period of about 15 games without scoring for England. This, IMO, makes you realise just how effective he was the rest of the time for England. And this period saw England only playing friendlies. He was top scorer in Euro 96 with five goals in five games, and scored 9 goals in 12 games at EC/WC overall. So, DWTA
Yeah that's fair and I'd thought of that - the hype around Ronaldo's "42 goals from midfield" was of course tosh as he was playing very much as an attacker. Despite that he was rarely playing as an out-and-out centre forward even at his most prolific and was more often found on the right of a pretty fluid and interchangeable front three. I'd be happy enough for this team to select him on the right wing, but in a more advanced role than Becks would play.I'd argue that he was only truly class when he played up front, and not in a right midfield role, so would therefore have no hesitation in putting Beckham in there in that position.
Couldn't agree more - the way he's maintained his loyalty and dignity amongst all the crap has been extraordinary

Ungrateful ****s. Bloke's worked absolute wonders down there while the club collapses around him. Deserve all they get.
They could do an awful lot worse. Although one suspects Hart could probably do better too.Couldn't agree more - the way he's maintained his loyalty and dignity amongst all the crap has been extraordinary
Can't see a bloke of his integrity being short of offers of employment - Tranmere perhaps?
Even from 2000 onwards a post-injury Shearer keeps a goal-every-other-game-ratio. And still scores 20+ goals a season. From age 30-36. With Newcastle. This phase was right in the middle of his epic streak for Blackburn.
The Premiership in the early to mid 90s was much easier to score in than it was from about 2000 onwards.
Shearer's Blackburn peak also saw epic international failures like Andy Cole, Robbie Fowler, Ian Wright and Matt Le Tissier hit in excess of 20 goals a season. I'm taking nothing away from Shearer, he was a terrific striker, however IMO scoring 25+ goals post 2000 is a greater achievement than doing it in the early-mid 90s.
I'd agree and go one step further, not only was he the best player in the league, he was the best player in his position in the world at one stage, albeit a relatively short one.I gotta agree with Uppercut there. Pires was the best player in the league at his peak and he didn't get the award for nostalgic reasons. Whilst Giggs has always been class, I don't think he ever was the single biggest reason for United winning a league or being the best player over a season. One of those players who was top class for a long time, rather than unbelievably good.
Yeah, dire, hope they suffer for this.
