Do those intellectual property rights apply in India? I suppose it depends on whether there is a reciprocal agreement between the US and India. I'd guess not.
Both are WTO signaturies and are expected to uphold the intellectual property originating in the other.

Knight Rider is a copyright of Universal Studios.

India already has a poor reputation for copyright protection.

Article said:
The US has placed 12 countries that includes India, China, Russia on a "priority watch list" for ''failing to sufficiently protect American producers of music, movies and other copyrighted material from widespread piracy''.
From here

As far as I can see there are 3 scenarios.
- They have got permission to use it
- They are being paid to use it and promote the forth coming Knight Rider series
- They dont care or didnt know and just used it

I dont know which it is but Id bet on the 3rd option.

EDIT- Mumbai Indians is a shocking name as you point out. It seems a little arrogant unless they want to forsake foreign players and make a statement.

Right, I mean if the Mumbai team are Indians, what does that make the rest of the teams? If I was an owner of another team, and trying to make inroads into the population of India to get fans, I'd be unhappy with a team calling themselves 'Indians' that is competing for the same fans. Unless, they mean Indians as in Cleveland Indians (I doubt that :p).

Im actually amazed that they are allowed to use the name Kolkata Knight Riders.

One would think the name was intellectual property of Universal TV and wouldnt be allowed to be used in a venture such as this.

Yeah, the word Knight Rider is presumably the intellectual property of the Universal Studios but Kolkata are the Knight Riders.

Makes no difference really.

4th scenario, call yourself the Knight Riders, after a George A. Romero film (which again is spelt differently, Romero's film is called Knightriders) and have no legal obligation to anyone. Universal would have no legal leg to stand on, unless the Kolkata franchise is exploiting the familiarity of the names - which given the people involved I doubt would happen.

However, it would be cool if Ganguly led out Kolkata to the TV shows theme...:)

The knight riders site.
You have got to hand it to SRK and red chillies entertainment.Their launch was the best, they have locked in sponsors, they have unveiled their kit from reebok and they are already are planning the off the field revenue generating activities too.

Actually theu are named the kolkata knight riders so it makes a difference not knight riders.
And i doubt you can sue someone using the name for a sports franchise as you have registered it with a different type of activities.
It is almost like someone having a intellectual property right for the word "dons" suing milton keynes dons for using that.
Besides india's anti piracy law are notoriously weak.

Chak de Kolkata!

Seriously they have been the most proffesional franchise off the field so far. Loving the Reebok kits. As long as we keep Nike far far away from the kit designs the teams will be fine.

The monstrousity of seeing half the teams with homogenous Nike kits will be avoided thankfully. Reebok, Puma and Adidas kits would be awesome if the franchises can get them involved.

Indeed and considering such high profile global entities such as Reebok, Tag Heuer are involved with the franchise me thinks there is no legal sticky ground.

SRK has reg both knight riders and Night riders with IPL

so may be he got some rights other wise he would have used Night riders

Really think they should've called them the Kolkata Knights. Would've worked so much better.

Looks like it will be a very flashy website, which is a good thing and hopefully the other franchises will be just as superficial in regard to marketing. ICL looks and feels cheap; the IPL has to have an air of luxury and indulgence about it, for India’s 400 million strong middle class will lap it up.

And their jersy color is Ocean Blue..doesnt it make more confusing now :)

its belived that IPL has given the go ahead as no team seems to have objected

To the site launches. Presumably that’s when one can buy tickets, shirts, mugs, post on the forum, read the player’s profiles et cetera. Good to launch early and wet the appetite of the fans.
