Both are WTO signaturies and are expected to uphold the intellectual property originating in the other.Do those intellectual property rights apply in India? I suppose it depends on whether there is a reciprocal agreement between the US and India. I'd guess not.
Knight Rider is a copyright of Universal Studios.
India already has a poor reputation for copyright protection.
From hereArticle said:The US has placed 12 countries that includes India, China, Russia on a "priority watch list" for ''failing to sufficiently protect American producers of music, movies and other copyrighted material from widespread piracy''.
As far as I can see there are 3 scenarios.
- They have got permission to use it
- They are being paid to use it and promote the forth coming Knight Rider series
- They dont care or didnt know and just used it
I dont know which it is but Id bet on the 3rd option.
EDIT- Mumbai Indians is a shocking name as you point out. It seems a little arrogant unless they want to forsake foreign players and make a statement.
