whether flintoff will pass cairns after playing the same amount of tests as him i don't know
I'd wager he will at the rate he's been going recently - 36 or so in 20 games isn't that many - 2 or 3 big innings and he'll be all but there.

State Vice-Captain
yeah, then by the time he retires, considering that he stays fit, that will be some record to beat

This is not true, the reason we refer to his recent stats is that his career stats dont give a true reflection of his ability. It was from 2001 that the Flintoff we see now began to emmerge, before that he was no more than a part-time bowler and a slogger and did not deserve to play for England. He lost a lot of weight and got very fit, changed his batting technique (playing the ball much later with a much better shot selection), and for the first time in years was able to practice his bowling after his back injury had healed sufficiently. QUOTE]

It is true. You have just acknowledged it by stating that you (and other Flintoff fans) do only want to focus on his recent form. I could do exactly the same as this with Chris Cairns, as he was picked too young also.

So I will....I'll play your game too .and fudge the stats to suit my argument .Here is Cairns record in his last 30 test matches....(he played 62)

M Runs HS Ave 100s 50s wickets B/b Ave 5w 10w
30 1909 158 41.50 4 10 121 7/27 26.88 9 3

Not too bad aye?

The whole Basis of my argument was not actually to compare the two players anyway. My argument was simply that it is my opinion that Flintoff is the most over-talked and Over-hyped player I've even known.

I do rate Flintoff as a "very good test cricketer (as I've stated previously). However he certainly isn't close to as great player as his fans seem to think. It just ribs me when he is talked in the same company as Botham, hadlee, Imran and co as he has been.

I even notice a thread solely dedicated to his "bowling Action".

I mean what next?? A thread on his favourite Aftershave???

I know everyone is entitled to their own opinions/threads, but c'mon english fans, lets be realistic here. Flintoff wouldn't make it in the current Australian top test team. At best he'd be 12th man if all the top Aussie players were available.

Lets just keep things in Perspective.....

i dont think he would make the current nz oneday team eathier
Would have to disagree.I believe Flintoff would be a welcome asset to any one day team in the world at the moment, even the Australian.

Just not the Australian test team.

no his bowling isnt as good as cairnes or oram
we wouldent need him we already have good enough players
after all nz was the best odi team in 2004 and are currently ranked 2
i dont belive flintoff would be an automatic selection in the current nz team when we have oram and carines

Based on what though?

Flintoff is currently rated at something like 7 in batting and 6 in bowling - I don't think any team would turn him down.

It was bad enough when you said Cairns, but Oram?!!!!
Yes I'll give you that. I'd swap you Oram for Flintoff at the moment.
At the same time, Big Jake Oram isn't the worst. Don't know if you saw his hundred against Aust in Brisbane or not, but he has got some talent.

Onedayers...Agree, no team at the moment would turn him down.

Test....Disagree. IMO Aussie would and Possibly India (At home on flat decks)

Because you've clearly got 11 players better than him (!)

A quick glance at the official world ratings shows that he is ranked better than any NZ batsman and all but one NZ bowler (owing to his recent missing of the Zimbabwe tour he lost points in both forms)

Yet you think he wouldn't make the side?
