Would you play Keith Miller in your Australia ATG XI?

This seems far more like a bowler short. It's basically just an unacceptable standard of fifth bowling to me tbh.
In these ATG scenarios, you are winning or losing games based on the standard of your four main bowlers.

Yes it's a nice value add to have a Sobers/Kallis 5th bowler but it's not a requisite. You literally need a 5th bowler to bowl rest overs and take the occasional wicket which Simpson is perfectly capable of but this isnt a deal breaker.

But all of that aside, I just prefer Border, he's a fighter at the bottom of the order who was well battle tested.
Yeah Border to me really completes that middle lower order batting as he is a real fighter.

Shame that Ponting can't make it tho buts it's an embarassment of riches for Australian middle order batting (though not opening oddly).

Perhaps Smith might like another shot at opening. 8-) This gives us a spot for Ponting.

Honestly if I am doing an Aus Second XI it will still beat most sides. It's ridiculous.

Hayden
Morris
Ponting
Harvey
Waugh
Clarke
Healy/Marsh
Davidson
Lindwall
Cummins
O'Reilly
A great line-up for a Second XI. The only change I'd make is Don Tallon as the 'keeper and batting at 10 behind Davidson, Lindwall and Cummins. Davidson regularly batted at 7 (or 8).

I don't think it's really a batsman short when you consider how much better than average the 3 and 7 will be.

I believe it was you that once said that you don't think Gilchrist would perform that well at this level of competition and may be found out a little.

Also kinda sounds like you're banking on Bradman to average close to his average in such a series, I'm way less convinced.

Not to add the WI would be outclassing them at 6, and with Walcott keeping, don't think the no. 7 advantage would be that great. And then there's Hayden opening.....

Stack the batting I say.

Re the last bit, prefer to be a little below standard for the 5th bowler than the 6th batsman, but that's just me. All 4 of their bowlers can operate effectively for longer spells.

Only if you feel you need 5 bowlers, which you don't.

I don't see the issue with having Miller at 7 and Gilly at 8.
Batting Gilly at 8 would be a massive waste of his batting ability.

I know Marsh is currently in the side as a specialist fielder but making him keep might be a step too far.

Millers batting isn't good enough to bat in the top 6 of an Aussie ATG XI.

But his bowling is good enough to be a third seamer.
Again, he didn't like to bowl though, and while he was good enough... There are better options.

With a full batting lineup, especially that middle order, you can afford to select the best bowlers. Plus Cummins or Davidson can hold a bat and if need be Lindwall over Lillee.

A downgrade to any attack. Either Chappell or Border make way for Miller.

My preference:

Simpson
Hayden
Bradman
Smith
Ponting
Miller
Gilchrist
Davidson (left arm variety)
Warne
Lillee
McGrath
The last 3 ATG to great teams in history, 5th bowlers

Richards
Waugh 🤷🏽‍♂️
Kallis

Kallis is the only world class option there and @subshakerz would argue that point.

Just want someone to hold down an end, keep the rotation flowing and not get taken apart and the odd break through. Simpson is more than capable of that imo.

More that Miller being an ATG batting contributor at the very least.

Not dissing Miller at all, just don't think these types of all rounders fit into this level of team, and if he does, as Subs says, it has to be 7 or 8 and one of the bowlers.

Just my opinion.

I don't see how you can entertain Lindwall over Lillee but find Miller as third seamer a bridge too far.

Having said that, I go back and forth between Cummins and Miller. If Cummins retires having improved on his current standing, I don't think I can deny him a place.
