Division Five - Round Three - Four Day Competition Preview

A very interesting round this week with the top three sides taking on the bottom three sides. The first round sees competition leaders Free State travel to Jamaica and they should walk away from this encounter with another truck load of points. It is hard to see where Jamaica can steal this one from Free State. Free State have a much better bowling lineup and it is doubtful that the Jamaican bowlers can make this game competitive. The only advantage Jamaica have is that this game is being played on their home ground and that should give their players some sought of confidence, but it won't be enough and Free State should win this one easily as they showed they can play well enough away from home with a crunching victory in Guyana last round.

The second game this round has three playing four and both sides are only separated by five points. Guyana started the season in fine fashion with a thumping win over Jamaica in round one, however their confidence was shattered by Free State in round two. Northern Districts have been anything but terrible this season, a credible performance in round one against Leicestershire almost saw them grab a surprise victory and they were all but gone against Mashonaland before a second innings revival. Also in Northern Districts favour is that Jimmy Jenkins, Guyana' s finest batsman is injured. Northern Districts also have the confidence factor in their favour after stealing a draw in their recent one day match up after being all but defeated. With a new manager and home ground advantage Northern Districts should get this game, and it will make for an interesting table.

There is not much point in Mashonaland turning up for their round three encounter with Leicestershire. Leicestershire have shown too much muscle with bat and ball already this season and their only true test will be when they face Free State in round five. Mashonaland were lucky (and that's putting it nicely) against Northern Districts in round two and they have since been flogged by Tasmania in their last one day fixture. Confidence will be low for the fledging team, and the end of the season cannot come quick enough for them. They will face a struggle to avoid relegation to division six.

Free State and Leicestershire again should sit unbeaten at the top of the table and Northern Districts should enter the winners circle for the first time this season.

by saying ND will win, it will be a draw best, with 0-0-0 conditions, id be surpried if my bowlers have the ability to bowl any team out twice in a match this season.

Munich posted their first 4-day win of the season over Limerick also marking their first game under new coach, Greg Thomas.

Limerick won the toss and decided to bat, on what looked like an excellent batting pitch.
However, Roll struck quickley and Limerick were 1-9, followed by Bolderstone's only wicket of the match, removing Jeffrey for 3. Khan and Henry held together to put on a 60 run partnership before Roll deceived Khan with spin, giving an easy catch to Worthington, and Roll his second wicket of the innings. Henrey and Ojha started to look like they'd make an impact before Worthington struck and dismissed Ojha for 23. Adams tried to stay with Henry but Sabir struck removing Henry for innings top of 70 and Madugalle for a duck. Adams was the next to go, followed by Parry and Byrne trying to make the score respectable for Limerick however Sabir stopped the resistence and the innings taking 6/38.

Munich's innings started shakily losing Tariq for just 8, caugt by Khan off some good Madugalle bowling, the score 1/16.
Any hope Limerick had of a batting collapse was quickley dashed as Athar and Bowes put on a partnership worth 158.
However, Bowes looking to hit a century was the victim of another classy Madugalle delivery, falling for 64. 21 runs later, Pagnis was dismissed for just 3 as French bagged his first of 3 wickets. Turpin (29 off 51) played anchor to Athar as they took the side past 200 with 68 runs for the 4th wicket, Athar brining up his 100 along the way, before Turpin edged one off Adams, to bring Birch into bat. The in form Birch was quickley off the mark and it looked these two would make Limerick suffer. However, just as Athar reached his 150 he was dismissed by an Adams slower ball, Munich now 5-300. Just 5 was added to that score as Holcombe came and went cheaply (4 off 6). Birch shuffled into the 20's showing great maturity as he and Worthington hit 43 before the latter was caught out on 16 (off 30).
Birch kept most of the strike as he approached 50 however an overly ambitious charge from Roll saw him stopped for 3 (off 9) giving Madugalle his third wicket.
This prompted Birch to get a wriggle on as Balderstone was dismissed for 3 (off 8) by French at the other end. Birch went to 51 off 109 balls with a 3, bringing Sabir onto strike who survrived just 3 balls, out for 1.

Limerick's second innings started off better with a 57 run opening partnership, which ended with Riley out for 21 from some sharp Sabir bowling. Jeffrey (16 off 31), Henry (26 off 62) and Ojha (25 off 62) all got starts but failed to continue on. Khan was dismissed for 59, with Limerick just short of making Munich bat again. Madugalle (41 not out) and Byrne (23) offered some late order resistence to move Limerick past Munich's score and 50 runs ahead before Birch struck removing the the last three batsmen for 2 giving him a total of 4-52, with Limerick all out for 234.

Athar (27 off 42) and Tariq (32 off 40) took just 14 overs to wrap up the match, Munich 0-59.

Athar's 150 earned him man of the match and a place in the side for the CW Bar cup.
Birch's 4-52 and 51* shows that he's a promising young player that we will surely see more of in the years to come.

After the match we nabbed a few words from Munich's new coach.

"I am very pleased with this strong performance from our side, and first 4-day win of the season. Hopefully we can continue to perform well in the CW Bar Cup and against Edinburgh in the next few rounds. We're looking foward to the challenges, especially in the Cup. We can learn a lot from that. We've got a great side with good young players and they're going to take us into the top 4".

Limerick 187 (S Henry 70, I Sabir 6/38)
Munich 365 (F Athar 150, I Bowes 64, Q Birch 51*, M Madugalle 4/69)
Limerick 234 (I Khan 59, Q Birch 4/52)
Munich 59/0
Munich won by 10 wickets

Division 5 Weekly Preview

Round four is crunch time for the division five sides with two matches in particular that should shape the fortunes of four sides for the rest of the season. The first game has Guyana travelling to South Africa to face Western Province. Western Province were coasting after the first two rounds, but found a speed bump in Karachi when they were beaten comfortably. Guyana's season has been one of 'near enough, but not good enough' on either side of their comprehensive victory over Tasmania, Guyana were three runs short against Karachi in round one and one run short against Northern Districts in round two, both times chasing. Guyana will be hoping to bat first and get the runs on the board, they will need all hands on deck, because if they lose and Karachi wins, their chances for promotion are slim. Likewise for Western Province if they get beaten and Karachi win they will lose pace with the early season pace setters. There is no team in this match up that screams 'we are going to win comfortably' but with Western Province having the home ground advantage and Guyana being so inconsistent, yet again this season, Western Province should get their season back on track with a victory.

The second important game of round four has Karachi hosting Tasmania. Karachi have been the most impressive side of the six in division five in the one day arena and round four should prove no different. It seems only a poor attitude by the players themselves can defeat Karachi, as no team as looked like threatening them (except for round one) and it is unlikely for that to happen. Tasmania are not without chance though, they have the bowlers to humble Karachi, but it will be a question of whether their batsman can either give them enough runs or chase the total they set down. Should be a very interesting game, and Karachi should be too strong.

The last game of round four sees Mashonaland hosting Northern Districts. Mashonaland have been able to keep teams at bay in the four day fixtures, however the same has not been the case in the one day side of things. Mashonaland were dreadful against Tasmania being bowled out for well under 100, they will need to take their four day resolve into this match if they are to be a chance. Northern Districts will be encouraged by their tie with Guyana in round three, in a match they should have lost, so they go into the game as favourites, and although they were beaten by Guyana in their recent four day outing and have one of their star batsman Sangakkara out injured they should have too much muscle for the lowly Mashonaland.

Round four should see Karachi and Western Province in very healthy postitions on the table and should see Tasmania, Guyana & Northern Districts all fighting to hold out fifth spot. Another interesting round ahead.

International Captain
Bangkok Wins Again

Bangkoks streak is alive and pounding as they beat Nairobi away by 4 Wickets.

It was a classic game of one day cricket as Nairobi won the toss elected to bat and decided to take on the Bangkok bowlers. Both Nairobi openers went out all guns blazing stealing quick singles and hitting some boundaries before Denver decided to go for two and was caught short of the line with a great throw from the outfield by Captain Smith. The Bangkok Bowlers then decided "The Time is Now" and Murtagh got rid of an aggressive Quayle for 20. Rendell and Oulton the picked up wickets then Murtagh gathered another wicket dismissing Bassano for 6 runs. But at the other end opener Weekes was in fine form notching up a century (clap) and continuing on with it til he wanted to add a 6 in the far right column "whoops the balls gone past him and Mount smashes down the stumps everywhere for the stumping" Weekes gone for 107 (131) Nairobi's tail enders were handy but were bowled out by Rendell and Philips

Nairobi All out 258
I Weekes 107
S Rendell 3/40

Its funny because coach chaulks style is aggression well wat do you know he sends in his captain and best batsmen to complete a task that is respectable. The 100 partnership comes up and we see Smith on 28 and Oulton hovering round 60. Then Smith thinks damn better catch up to this young gun and gets caught out for 28 the score 1/106. Oulton gets a new partner in Samarasekara and 10 runs later Oulton is out for 72 (67) a maiden later and Samarasekara is gone for 4. Phillips falls for a glden duck and Jaffer goes for 19 the score is now at 5/167 and looking bad but Bankok have a strong tail at the crease is Akhil and keeper Mount to steady the ship both making the same runs as ball faced before Akhil tries to get ahead of the balls faced column and is run out after falling over his own feet. This brings out Hancock from Bangkok and he and Mount reach the target with 3 overs remaining.

Bangkok 6 - 259
Q Oulton 72
B Akhil 41
R Mount 31*
R Hancock 35*
K Pickering 3/55

MoM - I Weekes 100 runs in a losing side.

Overall a wicked aggressive performance by Bankok well done!

Could be a chance with Sangakkara out, but your batsman need to do what they do in the four day competition - PUT ON RUNS! Otherwise you're stuffed.

lol yeah, i know.. if this line-up doesn't pan out, i'll go with the one i used in the cw bar cup, which had one extra batsmen and only the 3 bowlers
