Well have to say on this performance he's looking extremely good, it took Gilchrist a few years to develop into the player he is.
Hmm, Gilly made 88 on Test debut and 149* in his second Test. Didn't take too long...

Let me get this straight - you started a thread about how you may very well be the next Virender Sehwag, but you laugh at this...

Interesting.

And Jones' keeping isn't the best, but he's the better keeper in this game!
Rubbish. I was there and McCullum made plenty of outstanding stops from wild swinging deliveries. Almost all the byes he conceded were unstoppable and some of the byes that Jones conceded were his fault.

Simply adding up the byes is a very naive way of looking at things.

God, someone's painted that donkey with black stripes again! :p - but I agree with respect to counting byes.

Neither wicket-keeper could be blamed really for many byes conceded at Headingley, but both were partially at fault for some. It's an armpit of a ground where the keeper's stood a foot below the batsman's feet at one end and about waist high at the other.

But Mcullum did drop Jones on 30, and Jones pulled of a very good catch to dismiss Richardson, on such things doth the balance rest

About the same age Marc, 28 when he first played Test Cricket.

I think.

Although he had played a few 100 ODI's before he made his test debut, so he had plenty of international experience.

Whereas Jones has but a season of FC Cricket behind him.

Amazes me he came to the game so late!

Still, we can't expect a Gilchrist, but if he can average in the high 30s at number 7 (seeing as Flintoff seems to be determined to push his average above that and at the moment is batting so well and sensibly at 6 that moving him would be a bad move IMO) then we won't be too disappointed!

Perhaps a stupid question, but whatever happened to James Foster? Why was he dumped?

How old was Gilchrist when he started?
24 :p

Edit:

all right, 25. In one-dayers.

24 years and 1443 days in tests. :D

(walks away, totally screwed).

You know Parthiv Patel is shaping up pretty well with the bat, and he's only 18. Yay, the future Gilchrist!

McCullum is only 22 and while his keeping wasnt that flash in that innings it hasnt been to bad other than that, Ha has also scored 50's in just under half of his test innings.
He has got himself a decent future.
