Also we haven't toured there in an age so I hope that tbc 2 test in our winter is in the Caribbean
If it's in August, then it very well could be. Pakistan are making a short white ball visit to the Caribbean in July/August according to the FTP, but after that WI have no cricket until October.

It is really sad that Southee, who has had such a great career, is ending it this way. I have been such a fan, and now it feels like he is a piece of old chewing gum that I just cannot scrape off my shoe. His last two years have really soured my view of him as a cricketer.
I feel this way about Trent Boult, as well. It's important to remember the good times, and whatever happened at the end shouldn't detract from the good times along the way.

But what sticks in my mind for Trent is not making himself available at Bay Oval last year and the 'I'll play when it suits me, mainly in big tournaments or against Australia' mentality. It's almost the opposite of Southee - we didn't have any opportunity to sign him off, because we never knew when the hell it was his last. His last game was v PNG in a dead rubber T20 World game. Unbefitting of a guy who performed like he did.

With Tim, I don't blame him...all of us would try to go on as long as we can, and Tim's not heading off to work at Rocket Lab or join Tony Robbins on the speaking tour. But I agree that there's a souring of the overall view of the career.

From what Boult's said in the media, he was told point-blank they were never going to pick him again in tests after he turned down his central contract. I know your pov is that he should've at least called Stead and offered to play if he was needed, but if Boult's recollection of events is accurate then it really doesn't seem like it would've made a difference and I can fully understand why he wouldn't see the point in it.

As one of CW’s top pedants I must point out that the last England series was 2 summers ago. Sorry @SteveNZ but the sands of time really are slipping this quickly through the hourglass.

Aha, but SteveNZ said last year, not last season! And the Bay oval test was indeed played in early 2023! Egg meet TH's face.

The expanded test program - with the 2 'opponent TBC' tests & the additional Windies test - had to happen. You cannot go into a test schedule like we have in 2026 off the back of just 4 tests in 2025.

Nice try Bahnz, but I actually said that because it was the second such reference made by Steve of late, including this one to “last summer”

OK, that wasn't my impression of it - but I say that in that I only know from what I read in the media. Happy to go with that. In that case, I retract it. It still sticks in my craw he didn't play, when there and 'available'.

TH didn't factor in that the Bay Oval Test was my stag do, and I remember exactly when that was. And how poorly performed I was on that day.

I consider years to be seasons, I do not operate by the vagaries of the earth's axis.

I was there dressed as a Super Trooper and steamed off my nut, I like the idea that I was effectively at your stag

There was a real d*ck at the non-Mount end (dunno the official name) in a skirt, by the bar, giving out mountains of abuse to pre-empt the stuff coming back at him.

That was me.

Willy Nicholls has never recovered from the dire game-based chat I pinned him to in the middle session

southee didn't stick around cuz he wanted to help the team through a transition when boult, wagner and jamieson all left or got injured....he stuck around cuz no t20 leagues wanted his lazy trundlin ass ... if you're a seasoned pro it doesn't take several horrid drops of form + getting dropped to wake you up and try performing again

he ain't a team man .... now wagner and boult may not have been flawless characters themselves but they ran in for the fern with much more purpose than southee ever did

Tbf I think you could get slightly better numbers with less loaded options. Something like "Nah, Southee has been in poor form but he's an NZ great and I back him to have one last good performance."

This is a great point. Tim was only as faithful as his options. He'd have been a T20 gun for hire at the drop of a hat if they'd wanted him. It'll get sold that he's always been a team-first, loyal guy who valued playing for NZ over anything else - and to be fair, he's generally been fit enough to do so - but that's not the whole truth.
