Just bizarre selecting Chapman, choose Mariu as your backup, then if something happens to an opener, you have a ready made replacement, and if a middle order bat goes down you choose Mariu to open and Young bats middle order. Looks to back to the old 'must be 30 to get a gig' thinking.

The difference in approach to everything (selection/tactics) between McCullum and Stokes v Stead and Latham is mind boggling.

they clearly have the better two of the 4 kiwis in terms of selection

I think McCullum and Stokes' selections suck tbh. It's vibes based dribble and will slap them in the face reasonably often. Going full yolo is just 90s to 00s NZ selection.

Chapman is both one of the best batsmen available with a range of shots and deserves a call up based on performance. I don't think McCullum or Stokes would be actively anti Chapman in Stead's place.

It's the clinging to low percentage players that grates. Southee fails the eye test. Slow, not particularly accurate and no late movement.

The rest look varying degrees of crap but they all can't be cooked. That's why I think they need something Stead can't provide to get balance and confidence back in the batting.

The selection policy seems to be paying off v NZ at the very least, if you're not convinced about the wider sample size. Sure adds some excitement to those following and watching.

I agree with the Southee comment, if he plays in Hamilton, it's not because he's best placed to help the team win, it's solely for sentimental reasons.
I wonder if he ever thinks about knocking on the coaches door to say 'Hey I'm not contributing and haven't been for some time, let someone else have a run'. I guess he did that to some degree when giving up the captaincy, or was that subtlety suggested to him?

I'm not sold on Chapman, I'd like to see youth given the chance, this is another 30 year old, but I hope he does well if he gets a run.

I posted in the 'Doom and Gloom' thread re the last time NZ batsmen scored 100's, it makes for sobering reading.

What selections in the 90s could be filed under yolo? The cupboard was bare back in them days, and the team was rife with division.

But, Stokes and McCullum's selections may well be vibe based drivel (I don't personally agree) but they are just so much better than Stead's.

They also don't like to go outside those on the contracted list unless they really have to.

Speaking of good articles, I absolutely loved this one on Lou Vincent: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/cricket...tch-fixing-shame-turned-my-family-against-me/

Absolutely captures the person that Lou is. Couldn't meet a better bloke, who made a big mistake in his life but owned it, and is now spending the rest of his life making amends.
The thought of people yelling abuse in public at a guy who cheated at sport and has already been heavily punished is insane to me. It's not like he diddled kids or physically hurt someone.

People get furious about it because they're told taking money for sports is one of the worst crimes you can possibly do. Same guys are having a punt at the TAB an hour later.

Also great article, but is his son's name literally Vinnie Vincent?
