I feel this way about Trent Boult, as well. It's important to remember the good times, and whatever happened at the end shouldn't detract from the good times along the way.
But what sticks in my mind for Trent is not making himself available at Bay Oval last year and the 'I'll play when it suits me, mainly in big tournaments or against Australia' mentality. It's almost the opposite of Southee - we didn't have any opportunity to sign him off, because we never knew when the hell it was his last. His last game was v PNG in a dead rubber T20 World game. Unbefitting of a guy who performed like he did.
With Tim, I don't blame him...all of us would try to go on as long as we can, and Tim's not heading off to work at Rocket Lab or join Tony Robbins on the speaking tour. But I agree that there's a souring of the overall view of the career.

From what Boult's said in the media, he was told point-blank they were never going to pick him again in tests after he turned down his central contract. I know your pov is that he should've at least called Stead and offered to play if he was needed, but if Boult's recollection of events is accurate then it really doesn't seem like it would've made a difference and I can fully understand why he wouldn't see the point in it.

I have been a lot more impressed by England's bowling than their batting this series. Which is partly just because my expectation was the reverse. Brook's hundred in the first innings here was by all accounts a class apart, but most of the other key knocks for England have been rather skittish...

OK, that wasn't my impression of it - but I say that in that I only know from what I read in the media. Happy to go with that. In that case, I retract it. It still sticks in my craw he didn't play, when there and 'available'.
TH didn't factor in that the Bay Oval Test was my stag do, and I remember exactly when that was. And how poorly performed I was on that day.
I consider years to be seasons, I do not operate by the vagaries of the earth's axis.

southee didn't stick around cuz he wanted to help the team through a transition when boult, wagner and jamieson all left or got injured....he stuck around cuz no t20 leagues wanted his lazy trundlin ass ... if you're a seasoned pro it doesn't take several horrid drops of form + getting dropped to wake you up and try performing again

I know it's the bottom half of the internet, but the comments on the stuff article about selection for the 3rd Test are universally scathing about Southee and Stead.

This is a great point. Tim was only as faithful as his options. He'd have been a T20 gun for hire at the drop of a hat if they'd wanted him. It'll get sold that he's always been a team-first, loyal guy who valued playing for NZ over anything else - and to be fair, he's generally been fit enough to do so - but that's not the whole truth.

lol this armchair analysing of southee's internal motives needs to stop, as had been said 50 times now the issue is the coach and selectors not having the balls to drop him not the sportsman wanting to continue to be paid to play sports

According to Howsie's inside man, Sam Wells has been trying really hard to push Stead towards accepting new talents into the team/squad and Stead has just been very resistant to it.
