Third Test, Headingley

Day Two

With the match in the balance, Australian wicketkeepers Ruthless and Kasinathan looked like getting Australia on top as they batted through the first hour and compiled a sixth wicket stand of 71. But from a strong looking 281/5 England hit back with the second new ball, Thrust getting the breakthrough as Kasinathan edged to slip for another middling score. That sparked a collapse of 4 wickets for 12 runs as Thrust and Smyth-Brown picket up another, and Ruthless became the ninth man out to Herregonaes after putting together a fifty at the other end.

England weren't quite able to claim the spoils outright though as last pair O'Fcoco and David managed to edge and eke the score up to 300. Lunch came with the score on 305/9, and the last wicket stand frustrated England a little longer before Thrust ended the first innings for 322.

In the afternoon O'Fcoco added to his good day by trapping debutant Daemon in front with the new ball. But that was to be the only wicket of the session as England started galloping towards a response total, with Jason Arquis uncharacteristically thwacking a pair of sixes off Ruid. By tea the score was 75/1, and Arquis and Howe pushed England's total into three figures before the visitors hit back through Thexton David.

The match seemingly refusing to let one side have any ascendency, the legspinner had Arquis caught behind after another half century, and soon after dismissed David Worcester-Park and Sir Mole in successive deliveries in a quality spell. During all this Howe had made his way to 64, but was beaten by Ruid in a controversial lbw call to leave England on 144/5.

But once again, advantage couldn't turn into dominance. A late flurry of counter-attacking shots from Herregonaes and Roome broke the collapse, and though Herregonaes was dismissed for Starfighter's first wicket, Roome and Inksquid saw England past 200 and back in the game.

Day Three

The third day started with the match in the balance, England six down and around 100 behind. By the time the first session was over, Roome and Insksquid had completely erased the deficit. Both players breezed past fifty as the morning yielded 140 unanswered runs in a seventh wicket stand solely responsible for building England's lead.

And build it did. The two showed no signs of stopping after lunch and Australia's attack completely wilted. Roome was dropped on 90 off a Starfighter over, and it was the only highlight the visitors had. At one point wicketkeeper Babe Ruthless took the pads off and bowled (Inksquid hit his first ball for four) and fifties turned into hundreds for the numbers seven and eight.

By tea the record breaking 7th wicket stand had reached 250, and with the 500 total in sight Roome was launching his way towards the first double ton of the series. Eventually David found the breakthrough, beating Roome as he attempted to send one onto the rugby pitch. He was gone for an inspired 184 off 281 balls. The partnership had reached 304.

O'Fcoco got Smyth-Brown cheaply, but late in the day tailender Clint Thrust added some salt to the visitor's wounds with a frustrating unbeaten 22. England bumped the lead to over 200, and Inksquid was able to raise his bat again for a 150 before being the third and final wicket Australia claimed on the day. By stumps the innings wasn't even over.

Sixth highest test score by a #7 of all time and fourth highest by a #8. The ATG engine room produced by, of course, NGIN Roome.

Nice work by the lads there. If I hadn’t had my personality drained out of me by media training I’d say something inappropriate about what they’d been getting up to the night before to psych themselves up for the battle. In a word, Barry, magic cricket.

Day Four

There was just time for Thrust to hit a single boundary before being dismissed by O'Fcoco in the first over of the day. England's lead was a massive 228.

It was going to take a massive effort to turn things around and England's opening attack were on form to make sure that didn't happen. Thrust took a sharp return catch to dismiss Jevali for just 2 and in the next over O'Shea de Slim nicked off against Davis for a fourth ball duck. Varn Duff looked to shelve the attacking shots in a nervy hour at the crease, but Davis struck again to remove him in the last over of his spell.

England continued to pile on the pressure and the visitor's star bat from the last game Delonge was dimissed for 6 when Smythe-Brown found his outside edge. At lunch Australia were close to defeat at 54/4.

Having gone at two an over in the morning session Keast and Ruthless looked to change the pace in the afternoon and largely succeeded as the runs finally started to come in. Keast left frustrated with himself as he lost his wicket to offspinner Mole for 40, having looked composed, but Ruthless remained to bring up a positive half century and remained with Kasinathan who followed suit after tea.

The pair of keepers built up a century stand and looked like taking Australia back into the lead. But with England still 28 runs from batting again centurion Roome broke the stand byt dismissing Ruthless for 64, while at the other end Thrust's old ball spell did for Kasinathan whose 75 wasn't enough to be a top score if Australia were to get back in it. Starfighter stuck around just enough to get the visitors in front, and would have a chance to build a lead after reaching stumps unbeaten, but England were sniffing victory with only three wickets to collect.

Finally, a decent spell with the new ball. Typical of O'Shea de Slim that he didn't walk when he clearly edged it behind, but that's why his average has sunk since DRS came in.
