The Battle of the Englishmen

International Captain
Hobbs very comfortably. Despite his undisputed flashes of brilliance, Laker was not even a regular in the England side for most of his career, and was actually involved in less than half the Test matches played by England between his first and last Tests.

Ta, good knowledge. :) Seems cricinfo & Bearders disagree on that one.
Even today they have fun with that. If you ask Bearders, Flintoff has 3,077 Test runs and 179 Test wickets, while CI will say 3,127 Test runs and 186 wickets.

True thats, but he is still England's greatest off-spinner, which is a good accolade to have for not being a test regular i'd say.

The Master carries sway 8-2 & our semi-final line up is as follows: Ranjitsinhji, Barnes, Grace & Hobbs. Clearly English cricket peaked sometime before the First World War!

The draw is, as ever, random & our first semi pairs the two giants of the crease who ruled the world before Sir Donald settled all the arguments:

Battle of the Englishmen: Semi-Final 1

Jack Hobbs
61 tests, 5410 runs @ 56.94 (15 centuries, 28 half-centuries), 1 wicket @ 165.00
834 FC matches, 61,760 runs @ 50.70 (199 centuries, 273 half-centuries), 108 wickets @ 25.03 (5 wicket innings: 3)

vs

WG Grace
22 tests, 1098 runs @ 32.29 (2 centuries, 5 half-centuries), 9 wickets @ 26.22
870 FC matches, 54,241 runs @ 39.45 (124 centuries, 251 half-centuries), 2809 wickets @ 18.14 (5 wicket innings: 240, 10 wicket matches: 64)
