South Africa team selection

Wow. No de Zorzi. Who's going to open with Brand? I think the bowling attack is most definitely going to be Patterson, Olivier, Piedt and Moreki. I guess Fortuin plays as well. Brand is captain and Bedingham and Petersen are in the current XI so I guess they play. I'd throw Hamza in there as the next cab off the rank.

1. Brand
2. ?
3. Hamza
4. Petersen
5. Bedingham
6. ?
7. Fortuin (wk)
8. Piedt
9. Olivier
10. Paterson
11. Moreki
I think the reason why only 14 was named instead of the usual 15 is cause Tony signed a deal with Durban super giants on Thursday.
Likely he was in and captain till that happened.

I am not sure why fortuin gets in ahead of queshile and moonsamy both been much better this season.

Hmm I think Moonsamy is the best batsman of the lot? Is Fortuin head and shoulders above in terms of being a keeper?

Keeping ability is the only reason I can think for Fortuin being there, but is he really that much better than the others to offset the difference in batting? These days a keeper almost needs to be able to command a spot on batting alone, which Fortuin doesn't.

Yes I watched him open in a few LO games and whilst he has some nice looking shots he did seem to have some glaring defensive issues. Good luck to him against Southee and Co.

Think other 2 came through too late in the season with form and chad was the form guy at the time.

Well done Daniel nice one:

A warning this is a Firdose Moonda article so I took one for the team, the gist of it is this

"I took my name out of the (SA20) draft, so I can play in New Zealand," Bedingham said at Newlands, ahead of South Africa's first training session of 2024. "Shuks (Shukri Conrad - Test coach) just called and said there is a possibility and as soon as I heard there is a chance, that no-one from SA20 can play, I thought my chances of playing are probably quite high. So I didn't even have a second thought. I told him I will take my name straight off the draft so I can hopefully play."

Bedingham, unlike South Africa's other first-choice players, does not have a CSA central contract which is a crucial point of difference between him and for example, Aiden Markram. All nationally contracted players who have SA20 deals are obliged to play in the tournament ahead of any other fixtures, including internationals because CSA is a majority stakeholder of the SA20. Other players, such as domestic players, could decide whether they wanted to enter the draft or not. Most of them, in the hope of a big payday, did. But Bedingham, a purist who sensed an opportunity, did not.

"I've always loved Test cricket and I have always loved watching Test cricket. I always see it as a bonus if those things (leagues) come up but my priority has always been Test cricket," he said. "If those leagues come calling and I start doing well in those T20 competitions, that's perfect but the main aim is always to do well in Test cricket or first-class cricket."

If he is the real deal and nails down a Test spot then an SA20 deal will probably come around sooner rather than later anyway. It is nice to hear that he is desperate to play Test cricket though.

This seems to have all flown under the radar a bit - I only picked it up on social media (guess cacinfo didn't want to comment on case it upsets a financial backer). This is a bit of a dagger to the heart of test cricket.

Huh? Surprised Hardus Viljoen, didn't make sa test squad to nz.

Viljoen played in the latest round of domestic matches, so he's not injured. He appears to have been released by the Super Giants, which makes sense given that he played against West Indies A. So it looks like he was available, unless there's been a late sign-up like there was with De Zorzi, and not going to New Zealand must been that they haven't been particularly impressed by him.

My bad... he is not my favourite bowler, but would take him along considering the overall weakness of the bowling.

Most are experienced club cricket pros in England. I reckon only Mpongwana and Piedt have never played in England. Piedt was once signed to play in the Lancashire League but his contract was cancelled. 5 have played for current Lancashire League clubs. (Used to be) a good school of hard knocks. 3 played/playing county cricket, 4 played/playing for southern clubs teams in England.

How many times does someone need to say that means they probably have a SA20 contract or are injured. I believe Hardus is with the Super Giants.
If he had a t20 contract why did he play the 3 sa A games vs west indies wise one? that wouldn't make sense as he is like 34 years old. Also he tore through the wp batting team a week ago so it seems they picked the bowlers for the nz tour over him!"
