South Africa team selection

Does this innings settle the Jansen vs. Mulder debate for S. Africa's test match all rounder?
It doesn't. Mulder may not have done much in tests but Jansen is still averaging under 30 in first class matches with no centuries. He still needs to do more to prove that he can bat at 7 on a regular basis.

I'm starting to think that Petersen has hit his ceiling. Generally he is good for a start but I don't know if he has what it takes to knuckle down and score regular hundreds for us. We already have a similar player in the lineup in Bavuma so having two players who aren't regular 100 makers is going to make it very tough to compete in 400 v 400 games.

Yeah. I don't disagree. I think he should be kept on for a little while longer but his FC record shows similar issues. But with Elgars retirement and the NZ tour hopefully we get to see more players before finalising a final core group. I just hope De Zorzi keeps doing good, he is a huge boon for SA cricket right now.

I really hope Petersen comes right, he really did so well in the last home series against India
At 30 years old he seems to be going down vs younger guys who don't get a look in like Ryan Rickleton atm. Nz should be his last time at the end if he doesn't come right atleast for now and his experience will be needed in nz. He averaging under 30. Also just a bit younger Beddingham at 28 is looking class and on the up.

Petersen has a tendency to flirt outside off. It's a big scoring area for him but it can also be his downfall. The NZ series is going to be big for him,de Zorzi, Bedingham, Hamza and van Tonder if he gets a go. If Temba has one middle order spot then those 5 are playing for 3.

More immediately, will Hamza or Stubbs get a gig next week or is Mulder coming in at 7 for Bavuma? With Keshav in for Coetzee I presume.

Bavuma has a contract for the T20 comp.

It could also be a big series for Ruan de Swardt. While we're fans of Mulder here, the reality is that he hasn't delivered with the bat at international level. De Swardt may not be as good a bowler, but given our fast bowling depth right now, that's not as important as batting.

I think Bahseph means that Bavuma's guaranteed a spot in the middle order under normal circumstances, so there are only three spots available (and two if an all-rounder's playing). Although De Zorzi will probably take over from Elgar, so that would make it four players competing for those spots.

Yep that's what I meant. Look I know Markram is a huge talent but he hasnt consistently produced in Tests. SA aren't going into the NZ tour missing a Root , Smith or Kohli level talent. Every batsman on the trip is playing for a long term spot in the Test side. I am worried about the bowling though.

Sipimandla not got t20 contract right and stuurman? viljoen bowling well against wp, moreki is okayish, patterson is solid and mpongwe seems to be bowling better then his batting atm, also dane piedt and the lions fast bowler are decent, we can have a decent bowling lineup but think our batters will be stronger than bowlers and will need to lay a decent platform for nz tour.

Sipamla hasn't played for a while now, so we think he may be injured. Stuurman hasn't turned out for South Africa A in any of the recent matches, so it doesn't look like he's under consideration.

Wow. No de Zorzi. Who's going to open with Brand? I think the bowling attack is most definitely going to be Patterson, Olivier, Piedt and Moreki. I guess Fortuin plays as well. Brand is captain and Bedingham and Petersen are in the current XI so I guess they play. I'd throw Hamza in there as the next cab off the rank.

1. Brand
2. ?
3. Hamza
4. Petersen
5. Bedingham
6. ?
7. Fortuin (wk)
8. Piedt
9. Olivier
10. Paterson
11. Moreki

Don't like the selection of Zondo... But not surprising. I assumed Von Berg had a T20... Surprised he does not.

van Tonder likely to open with Brand. I assume De Zorzi has a T20 ?!
