Mashonaland sign Prasad

Tearaway fast bowler Daniel Prasad was today practicing with his new team Mashonaland for the first time after being signed up earlier this week by manager Andrew Cameron. When approached after the training session, Cameron only had positive words for the new bowler.

"Certainly, from what we've seen in the nets, Danny will be a vey welcome addition to the team. He'll be opening the bowling with Patrick [Laker], and we're hoping the two will form a good partnership for the team. The addition of Danny does mean that Zahid Saeed will no longer be in the starting side, but we're hoping that he will perform as well as we know he can in the 2nd XI and really push for a berth in the firsts."

When asked about the structure of the team as a whole, Cameron seemed just as positive about his teams prospects.

"I really don't want to say anything else that could be misconstrued as being ****y, but I do feel that we have a very strong first class team. With players like Lewis, Love and Youhanna, we have a lot of experience, while there are some exciting youngsters coming up like Oulton, Roll and Straw, who will all hopefully play a big role for us this season. All the same, many other teams in the league do seem to be very strong as well, so I want to refrain from making any predictions for our position at the end of the season."

Yorkshire land spinner.

After a trial match between a Yorkshire 'A' squad and a 'B' squad at Headingley, Manager Greg Thomas told reporters at the gate that Yorkshire have signed on a spin bowler.
"The only thing missing from our side was a quality spin bowler, and so we decided to draft one in. Kael has great One Day statistics with tight economy and a low strike right. Although he will struggle for a spot in the First Class attack which is seam orientated."

Mr. Thomas also remarked that their target for the next draft round would be a One Day specialist.

Despite repeated power outages in Karachi over the last few days, the Karachi team managed to just about get their draft picks in ok despite the problems.

New Zealand international Kyle Mills is a useful FC batsman and OD bowler and will help strengthen the Karachi team in it's quest for honours this season.

Mashonaland sign Currie

Mashonaland manager Andrew Cameron was today confronted by a rogue reporter who somehow forced his way into his daily afternoon massage with Mrs. Burke. Cameron, however, was in a surprisingly good mood and answered the reporters questions. When asked about their new signing, Dave Currie, Cameron was quite blunt in his response.

"To be honest, I don't see Dave making the first XI in either first class or one day games. He only signed him due to our requirement of having three keepers, but we're sure he'll do well in the 2nd XI, where he will be representing the team in both forms of the game."

When asked about the upcoming final round of the draft, Cameron was equally frank.

"The rest of the players are all pretty average, really. We'll most likely be looking to just secure some back-up for our one day players in case of injury
or loss of form."

Going to be pretty hard to lose with that Squad in OD. Of course, Queensland will be endeavouring to make that happen though.

Predictably the projected 1st team was far too strong for the 2nds, but the public has got to see all the new players and it was good match practice.

A reporter who covered the event wrote "This season has all the makings of exciting times for South Australia. First Class is looking good but the true strenghts of this team are the depth of talent in the squad and the excellent OD squad"

McNamara Questions South Australia's Practice Methods

As 1st XI manager Ian Markus was preparing a press conference to present the new WP squad to the South African public, 2nd XI manager threw a curveball at the South Australian coaching squad, who recently had some intraclub practice matches between their potential 2nd and 1st XIs.

"Really, what do you get out of playing your best players against your worst players? The gap in class between the two means that the 2nds get very little out of it, and as the start of the season continues to approach, surely you're better off giving them a much more competitive set of games than playing against sub-standard competition."

Queensland Manager Gaurav Nayak added his voice to that of McNamara, saying he didnt understand the purpose of them either. I mean, if your second XI can push your first team, then there must be something wrong.

SA 2nd Team manager defended the choice to hold intra-club practice games between the 1sts and the 2nds.

These guys who are attacking the idea are clueless. There was no trophy for the winner and the results did not matter. Those that criticise are missing the point. Rather than a competetive excercise, it was a public relations exercise.

It was a fantastic opportunity for the new guys to get to meet everyone and get to feel part of the club before the season starts.

KJ Goughy said "I have thousands of e-mails that can attest to the fact that the public loved seeing all the players together and having the opportunity to have their photos taken with the guys and get their autographs. The 3 game series was a massive success in terms of promoting the team and we have seen membership dramatically increase as well as advertising and sponsorship explosions"

The local media was also very supportive of the idea and are predicting an exciting season for South Australia.

Lancashire Squad Embarks on Pre Season Camp

With traditional Northerners Dave Richards and George Roberts in charge, the new-look Red Rose outfit today announced a brutal fitness-***-teambuilding camp to be held over the next week.

In the SAS-style 'boot camp', new recruits and experienced pros alike will be put through their paces in a programme of activities in a secret location in the Lake District, a short journey from the team's home ground in Manchester.

Paragliding, canoeing, rock-climbing and fell-running are but a few of the events scheduled to take place, with the adventure week culminating in a 24hr speed hike through the whole of the Lakeland area. Richards and Roberts are reportedly to oversee the whole circus from a mobile beer tent, generously supplied by the CW Bar.

The highlight of the trip, however, is a new interpretation of 'team bonding', which will see the entire Lancashire team paired up and superglued together for several hours. When challenged over this unusual plan, Roberts responded by pointing out that it would be both far more fruitful and entertaining that the much criticised Western Australia practice matches. However, to make sure the competitive spirit continues to run in the camp, a raft-building competition between the 1st and 2nd XIs is scheduled to take place during the get-together.

McNamara stands by earlier statement.

In a short press release, McNamara stated: "The point I made was that SA should have mixed their sides up to provide a more competitive environment for their practice matches. I'm sure that would have pleased the crowd a lot more than a series of games where one side got pounded."

Western Province Officially Begin Training

Closed gates is what met the media who ventured out to Newlands to see the start of the South African giants season preparations. The only contact that the media received from manager Ian Markus came after the training session where he appeared for a short press conference.

Markus was quick to squash the rumours that the club was once again looking to have a big year in the trading market saying "with all the changes that have happened over the past few months it's great to finally get down with the boys. We believe we have a very solid group of core players who are all important and cannot be traded if we are to win the title". When pressed on the issue however Markus did mention that "after speaking with Jack about the sides make up he is still very keen to make some trades to look after the squads depth, so he is really the one who is keen to make trades and he is free to do so".

Markus also announced the club captains for the upcoming season "after many solid seasons at the club Farq Funston will this year be leading the first class side and his vice will be Ghambir. Both players are excellent batsman with very sound cricketing knowledge and we feel both will be able to make sound onfield decisions". The captain of the OD team however came as a shock to the public as it was announced that Zack Ardley will lead the side this season. "Whilst Zack is new to the club it is felt that he is a long term option for the club to lead the OD side into a new successful era".

It is believed that second XI manager Jack McNamara will appear later to the media crowd to outline the clubs trade desires.
