Road to the 2017-18 Ashes in Australia

Interesting article by Ian Chappell on cricinfo. Several takeaways: England have no chance if stokes is missing, Australia should win if their fast bowlers are fit, Ashes could be first competitive series in test cricket in a while. Agree with the first two points. Last point makes a mockery of the fighting spirit shown by WI and Bangladesh respectively (esp Bangladesh).

Doesn't the first two points contradict the third?

Hahaha Chappell. It's incredible that he writes a regular column on Cricinfo which is exclusively limited to cricket involving India, Australia and England. He doesn't even acknowledge any cricket outside of that so I'm not surprised he hasn't seen any competitive test cricket for a while

Don't be mean, it's not as if he's literally paid to watch cricket

That's an absolutely bizarre interpretation of his words:

The upcoming Ashes series has the potential to be just what Test cricket desperately needs: a highly competitive and hard-fought contest. However, it will be severely diminished if Stokes is absent, meaning that Australia could virtually wrap up the series before a ball is even bowled, following a blow delivered by one of their fiercest opponents.
It doesn't really suggest any previous series in the last couple hasn't been competitive

and it's somewhat ironic to criticise Chappell for not watching enough cricket without even bothering to check what he actually wrote...

Umm I did read what he wrote hence y I said what I did in the first place. Chappell said test cricket desperately needs a highly competitive series, idk how else I'm supposed to interpret that other than to assume that all the recent test series were one sided, which they weren't

Really? Because you should be able to interpret it many other ways.

Chappeli is a crazy old bastard but it seems in this case you were inventing your own issues with what you imagined he said
