I have no words to describe the amount of sadness Im feeling at the moment.

This is incredibly devastating and distressing to me. As a loyal watcher of Fox Sports' 'Inside Cricket' program, in where Hookes hosts it Live every week, its going to hit me a lot.

Hookesy was a great guy, who was fearless in many ways and lead by example for the Victorian Bushrangers.

So very sad to end like this....

RIP Hookesy
May God bless your soul

Cricket Victoria's CEO Ken Jacobs said: "On behalf of the board, players and staff of Cricket Victoria, I'd like to say how saddened we are at the tragic passing of our coach David Hookes.

"All our thoughts and prayers go to David's wife Robyn and his family.

"I'd like to thank all the members of the public who have offered their support and best wishes.

"It's a huge loss for us all."

Funeral arrangements will be announced in the next days. As a mark of respect to Hookes and his family, it is not certain if the Victorian-South Australian game will start on Friday as scheduled.

It is likely that Greg Shipperd, Hookes' assistant, will be Victoria's caretaker coach in the final eight weeks of the season.

Hookes was in his second season with the Bushrangers.

He played 23 Tests and averaged 35 for Australia, his magic moment coming in his very first Test when he hit England captain Tony Greig for five 4s in a row during a majestic half century which will never be forgotten.

From the Victorian Website, what should i wear to the funeral to stand outside, my vic t-shirt or my aussie t-shirt?

I know one umpire who was on "Inside Cricket" last week who will be shattered to hear this...I know while he and Hookesy didn't always see eye-to-eye, they had mutual respect for each other.

I know it will be hard for me to watch "Inside Cricket" now....Rest In Peace Hookesy!

What shocks me is how suddenly this all unfolded , this time yesterday he would've been preparing to head out for a night with the boys after their hard fought win , muling about in his head would have been the shortcomings he would have to address at training before Friday.

All accounts indicate they were just having a nice quiet drink , then out of the blue a dispute errupted & he stepped in & attempted to put a damper on things in a non-confrontational manner , then some egotistical 22 year old bouncer decided it would look pretty cool if he took matters in to his own hands , and just like that , suddenly we lost one of the most valued members of the Australian cricket community:(

It saddens me to look back on how much everyone took him for granted while we still had him , he was always Hookey that outspoken , attention seeking , Blue critic from South Australia.
I for one used to always consider him a very interesting man , he had a superb eye for talent....and he should know after all.
And one of the best cricketing brains one could hope to find , the thing that really stood out was his honesty & sincerety , he would always speak his mind , no half measures , no side-stepping the issue , he made sure no one was in any doubt as to his opinions.
Of course that got him off side with many people & I certainly cannot say I agreed with everything he said , but his honesty & integrity will be sorely missed , he offered another angle on things in the media with his work for 'Inside Cricket' & he was in the process of transforming a mediocre Bushrangers team into a very powerful unit , I for one will be supporting the Bushrangers from now on in this years Pura Cup , as has been said DO IT FOR HOOKESY.
I was just the other day pondering how funny it would be if we made Hookesy chairman of selectors.
We really dont know how much we value characters like him until we loose them:(

Death is never a plesant thing.

Yet the news of the death of David Hookes saddens me immensly. A great bloke, superb cricketer and excellent coach.

Just a bloody good human being, in my Australian jargon.

We'll miss you Daivd. You gave to the game and to life what most can only dream of.

RIP.

Well said...it takes a tragedy for people to realize how good they have things....I was never a huge fan of his but we did agree on somethings....

Watching "Inside Cricket" will never be the same again!

R.I.P. David Hookes.

From his comments and other peoples comments, it seems he was someone who truly loved cricket and wasn't afraid of saying what he felt was best for our great game.

Cricket needs more of those kinds of people.

Thats for sure , he was what made the show , his opinions on everything were just from a totally different angle , often very abstract but always worth listening to.

I doubt the show will rate half as highly without him :(

This is a very very Sad day for Australian and World Cricket...

To have such a high profile and honest charachter taken from us is a tragedy...

May he ever RIP..
My condolences to his family and friends and I will be another cheering on the Vics for the rest of the season...
Alot of those guys in that side owe alot to him and im sure they will DO IT FOR HOOKESY

The issue im more concerned with(Maybe cause im in that kinda field of work) is the crowd controller(Bouncer) who has been charged with Assault and released on Bail. Im sure there will now be a warrant for his arrest and the charges increased to manslaughter.. A problem with our society is that is so easy for people to get into a position of some kind of power with no real tracking of their background... Until this is sorted things like this will happen....

Once again RIP Dave, You were a Bloody Champion

I enjoyed last week when he and Simon spent 15 minutes talking about Umpiring Issues....always great to see a coach who is interested in what the Umps have to say

"But I'm just in shock - he'd only gone out to celebrate a win with his mates and their wives. You don't expect that sort of thing to happen in Australia. Life can be bloody shocking at times"

Former Victorian Legend, Dean Jones

Deano's got it absoultely spot on here. Here is a guy, who deserved anything that night, but to die. He had a wonderful game as coach, where most of his tactics paid off fully. In America or South Africa, this sort of thing is heard of, but in such a peaceful country like Australia, its a first really. This could've been anyone on a night out, even your own kids, even your own brothers. It was just fate that it happend to be a valued member of our cricketing community

I hope that prick of a bodyguard, has this weighing on his conscience for the rest of his natural life. Thats the only punishment fit for him really, guilt and remorse. Because by god, he should feel that way.

Where is Justice and God when you need them?

What's the world come to?

MB...I'm afraid the days of going out with mates to enjoy a night out are long gone....

My father would be worried everytime I went out with mates even though there'd be a large group of us....I know they I used to wait up and make sure my brother was home safely after a night out...The world isn't a safe place anymore..and that scares the hell outta me!!

As for justice...Sadly there's no such thing anymore..

I wouldn't be so optimistic. The Fox Sports article says he 'technically died' and could suffer brain damage if he does come out of his coma.

It is a terrible incident and age you are right this is happening all to often in Australia.

All my thoughts are with Hooksey and his family.
Ewan Chatfield "technically died" during a Test against England, and he recovered. Seems like Hookes' injuries were just too severe.
