According to the report things dont look good , he is still alive , but showing no signs of improvement.

They say his family now has to decide whether to turn the life support off:(

Apparently they just had a newsflash on channel 7 saying theyve pulled the plug. This is awful, and the biggest shock...

from what i can gather,

he is still alive, or at least there has been no official announcement saying otherwise.

but the odds off him pulling through appear very short, and if he isn't already dead, it appears almost certain that he will be within the next 24 hours :(

one of the most tragic events in australia cricketing history.

Yeah that really is shocking, I hope they catch the culprit.
They have, he was let out on conditional bail this morning. I guess he'll be up on manslaughter now. This doesn't help improve the opinion of 'bouncers' IMO.

Sad, sad day.

A truley sad way for anyone to pass from this life. May his legacy live on. My condolances to his family and friends.

Former Australian batsman killed

David Hookes dies after assault

Wisden Cricinfo staff

January 18, 2004

David Hookes, the former Australia batsman and current coach of Victoria, has died in a Melbourne hospital after being injured while attempting to break up a fight outside a St Kilda hotel.

Hookes, 48, was treated by paramedics for half an hour at the scene of the assault before being rushed to intensive care, where he is in an induced coma on a life-support machine.

Eyewitnesses said that Hookes was trying to break up a row between a group of bouncers and wives and girlfriends of players of the Victorian cricket team. "The sound [of Hookes being hit] was sickening," one witness told reporters. "It was an ego thing [for the bouncers]. They wanted a fight. That's the way it looked like."

A 22-year-old man, Zdravco Micevic, was charged with assault after a brief appearance in the Melbourne Magistrates Court.

Hookes made a memorable Test debut against England in the Centenary Test at Melbourne in March 1977, scoring 56, including five boundaries off a single Tony Greig over. He went on to play 23 Tests between 1977 and 1986, making 1306 Test runs, including a top score of 143 not out, at 34.36. When he retired from first-class cricket in 1992 he was the highest runscorer in Australian domestic cricket. In retirement Hookes became a successful coach and an outspoken media pundit.

More to follow.

They better ****en catch this ****en son of a bitch. **** him.

I hope all the magazines and newspapers out there don't criticise Hookes' selecting policy anymore.

Just shows when he was doing something good in separting the fight and gets this for it.

Hookes was a great guy from what I have heard from the likes of former players Crowe, Chappell.

Trageic news.
