First ODI: Cricket Web XI v West Indies
at Fardin Qayyumi CC
Scorecard
Ball By Ball
Cricket Web XI took first spoils in a nervy, low-scoring encounter at Goffmouth, with Tom Halsey inciting the necessary zip into the innings despite another couple of good middle-over bowling performances by Sammy and Mohammed. It was, however, trumped by Liam Camps, who bowled two maidens in a spell with economy rate of two.
West Indies got off to a good start after being inserted, and Gayle and Ganga put on 49 before the seam bowlers finally found luck, Ganga hoiking to Markus for 26. Morton followed shortly after, and though West Indies averted the collapse, they were severely set back due to their long tail. Gayle and Chanderpaul were utterly tied down, especially by Camps, who found plenty of movement and beat the bat on plenty more occasions than one wicket in 10 overs would indicate. Chanderpaul stood tall, and began to attack once West Indies were four down, but with Bravo struggling to get anywhere, so did the scoreboard. Only Sammy's three boundaries and 15 extras took the total past 200; though the wicket was slow and the outfield slower, it hardly seemed enough.
The Webheads were in cruise control after the powerplay sessions, the total 97 for one after twenty overs with the well-versed ODI batsmen Markus and Cloete in. Jermaine Lawson had bowled a snorter to get rid of an uncertain Stedman, but it was Bravo's double catching strike at slip that gave the West Indies a slight chance. Mohammed and Sammy bowled tempting lines that caused a lot of empty swishes, before Markus swung across the line to a yorker from Mohammed...and missed completely.
With Crampton and Camps still to come and just 61 required, no one in Goffmouth were particularly worried. There were, after all, a few overs of Bravo and the seamers still to come. Bravo, however, provided one of those deliveries only he can bowl for the West Indies at present; a quick, inswinging ball that trapped Crampton lbw, then an outswinger edged for four, then an inswinger which shattered Camps' stumps. Six down and still 40 needed off the last ten overs.
Sammy and Bravo still had a couple of overs left, and though they shook up the batsmen, Halsey managed to settle with six at the end of their spell. With Lawson and Taylor back, Halsey edged and took off on every ball, while Butler, who had stolidly defended his way to 21, relieved pressure somewhat with a four off Bravo. In the end, Halsey hit eight off Taylor's ninth over and the Webheads won with 21 balls to spare.
