well he should have been given a consistent run but hes still had plenty of chances though, and he hasnt scored a century since the series against england in 04.
nonetheless has he been in good form in the last domestic season, because theres no point in including an unproven player who isnt in the best of form?
He's been one of the leading runscorers in domestic cricket for years now:

2001/02 - 841 runs @ 64.69
2002/03 - 798 runs @ 33.25
2002/03 - 1014 runs @ 67.60
2003/04 - 785 runs @ 34.13

Are you serious?? He's played one complete series and otherwise gets a couple Tests here and there, yet you're endorsing Hinds over him? That's quite frankly ridiculous. Devon Smith hasn't been given the chance to fail consistently or perform consistently. Hinds has, and has managed to prove very inconsistent.
I guess by that then Sarwan and Gayle shouldn't be in the team. Neither Edwards nor Powell. I was looking at innings not Tests. Hinds provides a bowling option. It makes no sense arguing about this anyway, neither of them has done well and they have both had a decent amount of chances to do so.

Here's the deal:

Devon Smith has not gotten a proper run in the side.
Gayle and Sarwan have.

Big difference.

how about this chuck both of em and use sherwin campbell
Is he still playing and if he is, how well is he doing in the Windies domestic competition? I always felt that the bloke had more talent than some of the openers tried out now, esp. given how strong he is off the back foot, would be useful in Perth, I would think.

i always felt that stuart williams had a lot more talent and potential than most WI openers, unfortunately his test record is very very ordinary.

Sorry. Those stats include all FC innings.

His '04/'05 domestic stats:

671 @ 37.27

Still not amazing, but he started the season woefully out of form on some crap pitches:

0, 2, 6, 57, 3, 0

As the weather improved, so did he:

603 runs @ 50.25 - 3 fifties and 2 hundreds in 12 innings.

Don't see how much of a difference he'll make over HInds but I'm willing to see.
Hinds has gotten a good run in the side and hasn't been as good as he should have been.
Smith has not gotten a proper run in the side.
Smith has better technique than Hinds. Smith scores more domestic runs than Hinds.

It's a fairly simple consideration.

'04-'05 : 414 runs @ 25.87, 3 fifties, 0 hundreds in 18 innings
'03-'04 : 559 runs @ 43.00, 1 fifty, 1 hundred in 15 innings. The hundred was 211 not out, meaning he averaged 26.77.

You've seen Stuart Williams bat at Test level?

He looks so far out of his depth that Ian Ward looks an attractive prospect.

really? he looked to have a better technique than almost every other WI opener since then.

darren ganga definetly, devon smith is arguable. nonetheless i said 'most'.
Smith has his footwork sorted and plays with a straight bat more often than not. Stuart Williams has struggled with footwork at the highest level.

If Ganga plays, there'll be some happier Australians. I think even Tait will fancy his chances.
