My selection for SL squad (of 16) for VB

Jayasuriya (Unfortunately SL rely on the old guy still and there is no option but to take him around to Oz and see if he can re-discover some form)
Tharanga
Atapattu (Captain)
Jayawardene
Sangakkara
Dilshan
Arnold
Chamara Kapugedera/Michael Van Dort/Ian Daniel (any 2 of these 3)
Murali
Vaas
Dilhara Fernando
Nuwan Zoysa
Chandana
Dilhara Lokuhettige
Kaushalya Weeraratne .
This is SL squad obtained from News Service via another forum

Sri Lanka squad for VB series 2006: Marvan Atapattu (captain), Chaminda Vaas, Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Upul Tharanga, Michael Vandort, Farveez Maharoof, Muttiah Muralitharan, Malinga Bandara, Jehan Mubarak, Russel Arnold, Ruchira Perera, Dilhara Fernando, Chamara Kapugedara and Nuwan Kulasekera

Michael Van Dort finally makes it into the Team . I would have preferred Chandana over Bandara , Lokuhettige over Ruchira Perera (who has yet to have a go in NZ and so lot of unanswered questions !) and definitely Nuwan Zoysa over either of these.

Jehan Mubarak set for another little holiday down under while SL cricket continues to decline . I would have dropped him despite his 50 which failed to dominate the bowling and drive SL to a win yesterday and picked Ian Daniel instead .

Jayasuriya looks to be out of the official squad. Although I suspect he will tag along with the Team with a view to coming into the Team as fitness permits.

Overall not a bad squad , considering finally the idiot selectors have decided to give Michael Van Dort a go.

I can't believe it. Vandort finally makes it. man! I'm so happy for him. now I hope he can get a game.
I too would have liked to see Chandana in the squad. hopefully Atapattu can win a few tosses this time around.

Actually I have heard that Sanath J, will be sent home for good (from NZ) and not take part in the VB series .

This may see the end of his career unless he recovers (from the shoulder dislocation in time ) and finds form in domestic cricket.

Barely. Getting dropped and looking uncofmortable for very unatractive 40s and 50s.
Who cares if they're unnatractive? It's still 40 or 50 scored at a very healthy SR

I think Dorey could have some success against Sri Lanka with his height. It's strange and maybe a bit premature but it could pay off. It's a shame how we're picking some of our lesser fast bowlers ahead of Gillespie, Kasprowicz, Bichel and Nicholson.
yea but in any case the selectors would not have goe back to Bichel & Nicholas regardless of anything. But lets see how these guys go & at the same time lets hope Dizzy & Kaspa keep bowling well at domestic level, so if they fail we got these blokes to come right back in.

Having seen Bandara's bowling in today's final ODI , I am not convinced that he will be a good choice particularly given that the ODI is at the Telstra Dome in Melbourne.

My personal feeling is Chandana would have been a better choice.
My team would be -
1.vandort (I suspect the selectors will pick Mubarak for the first ODI over Van Dort)
2.tharanga
3.sanga
4.mahela or Mubarak (Mahela seems to be struggling a little and if he does not come through in the next Match I think Mubarak should replace him)
5.marvan
6.dilshan
7.arnold
8.vaas
9.kulasekara
10.Ruchira Perera
11.murali

Super Sub - Maharoof

I have a feeling he won't play in the first game. they'd probably stick with Mubarak. hope I'm wrong.

From what Ive seen of Fernando, Perera, Malinga etc against New Zealand, they will get absolutely hammered in Australia. They dont really get any movement at all, and they seem out of form in terms of accuracy. Fernando still seems like he has rocks in his head when he bowls, too.

They arent going to win with this pace attack. I'd make a brave move and just stack the side with restrictive spin bowling allrounders, and try to restrict the Australians/South Africans and then chase it down with a long batting lineup. It cant really happen though, because Chandana, Herath, Dharmasena etc havent been picked in the squad at all. I'd definately pick Bandara in the eleven though, and bank on Dilshan bowling 10 overs. In fact, I'd open the bowling with Dilshan against Australia. Would be interesting to see what Gilchrist and Katich did against him.

I also think Atapattu is wasted a bit at 5. Sure, he can nudge and nurdle the bowling through the middle overs and get unbeaten 40s and 50s doing so, but hes too good a batsman for this role IMO, and should be batting at #3. The younger, more expansive players should be kept under later on IMO.

1. Kumar SANGAKKARA
2. Upul THARANGA
3. Marvan ATAPATTU
4. Mahela JAYAWARDENE
5. Tillekeratne DILSHAN
6. Russel ARNOLD
7. Jehan MUBARAK
8. Farveez MAHAROOF
9. Chaminda VAAS
10. Malinga BANDARA
11. Muttiah MURALITHARAN
SS: I really dont know. I wouldnt even bother bowling Fernando/Malinga/Perera if I had them available, so I guess I'd pick Vandort.

Why should they?
Because the AUS/SAF/NZ tournament combination was enjoyable. Heard of a sporting rivalry between these countries? Maybe not.

I would have liked NZ to be in this VB, instead of next year where we have to face the overrated Poms who are incapable of living upto their new found reputation. The 06/07 VB series will be competed by two top nations, and a nation who is found to have a 'choking' ability in England. Waste of a showclass event really.

i don't think they'll ever let sangakkara open. Vandort is the likely option. and I agree with u on having spinners in the side, but I wouldn't count out Perera.

I think Sri Lanka will - as Pakistan did in the finals last year - pretty much lose every game against Australia in the first 15 overs of their innings. In my view, they'll be undone by the searing pace of Brett Lee and the bounce generated by McGrath. How often are teams 3 for 30 against Australia in ODI's. It's insane!

I dont think Sangakkara will open either, but I would open with him if I was a selector.

I saw Perera bowl today, and I think I'd be being kind if I said he wasnt international standard. I dont even think he'd make an Australian first class side. Honestly, if Perera was to be the supersub in the team I named and Sri Lanka happened to bowl second, I probably still wouldnt use him. Ten overs each from Vaas/Dilshan/Maharoof/Murali/Bandara and Arnold to bowl a couple if need be.

Not only would I pick Bandara, but I'd pick Chandana as well if he was in the squad, and leave Maharoof as the supersub. Sri Lanka need to try something different if they are going to challenge this series. They really need to play to their strength, which is spin bowling and natural batsmen. Picking as many spinners as possible, and giving the batsmen freedom to play agressively by having a long batting lineup is the only way Sri Lanka will trouble Australia or South Africa. They cant go into this series with conventional thinking, but Im almost certain they will. Brave tactics like opening the bowling with Dilshan and picking three specialist spinners will give them at least some hope of it strangely pulling off. Gilchrist, Ponting, Smith etc would absolutely hammer Perera, Fernando etc if they played, and trying to get batsmen like Mubarak and Dilshan to play conservatively wont work either - they need to try something different.
