The Australian ODI side for the VB series has been announced.

I really like the inclusion of Brett Dorey. Also Martyn is back into the squad after overcoming an injury.

Australia squad Ricky Ponting (capt), Adam Gilchrist (wk), Simon Katich, Damien Martyn, Michael Clarke, Michael Hussey, Andrew Symonds, James Hopes, Brad Hogg, Brett Dorey, Brett Lee, Nathan Bracken, Glenn McGrath, Stuart Clark
Dorey has had half a good season and they put him in what are the selectors doing? Why bother playing Lewis in the 20/20 match?

god knows why they dropped him for Dorey
Because Dorey has potential, has the advantage of height, and has shown plenty in Domestic cricket this summer.

ING Cup Stats

Mick Lewis from 4 matches has taken 8 wickets @ 23
Brett Dorey from 5 matches has taken 7 wickets @ 26.28

I'd still take Lewis over Dorey. Lewis has been performing consistantly well for a few years now, Dorey has half good season and is rewarded

I was thinking more the Pura Cup stats, Mike, where he's the leading wicket taker and has an overall FC bowling average in the low 20's. I take your point about the ING Cup though.

Glenn McGrath played 8 FC matches before being picked in the Test side and Warnie's average for Victoria, correct me if I'm wrong, is STILL above 35 and was around 45 when he first played for Australia. Sometimes, there are reasons beyond statistics and other things which dictate selections. Happens all the time.

Because it worked really well with Johnson.

I get your point though but they should be made to work for thier place in the team. Why would they pick Lewis for the 20/20 match but not the VB series?

that may be so but from what i saw of Lewis i dunno if he would make himself a fixture anyway, remember Tait & Dizzy are around the corner. Lets see how Dorey goes...

Look, for every example of a punt (notice use inference of 'gamble' in the word) which went wrong you could give, I could give just as many where it worked. No-one said it's a perfect idea. Sometimes it comes off, sometimes it doesn't. Dorey might get hit for a hundred runs or he might take a bag. Either way, he looks as if he's shown enough to give him a go. I saw him at an ING cup game against SA and he was on the spot. He deserves to be looked-at.

Probably because he can hit the ball and wouldn't get a spot ordinarily. He's bowling well enough too. He'll probably get a go later in the series as the Aussie look to rotate bowlers. I don't think he's played his last ODI.

My selection for SL squad (of 16) for VB

Jayasuriya (Unfortunately SL rely on the old guy still and there is no option but to take him around to Oz and see if he can re-discover some form)
Tharanga
Atapattu (Captain)
Jayawardene
Sangakkara
Dilshan
Arnold
Chamara Kapugedera/Michael Van Dort/Ian Daniel (any 2 of these 3)
Murali
Vaas
Dilhara Fernando
Nuwan Zoysa
Chandana
Dilhara Lokuhettige
Kaushalya Weeraratne .
As I have said before All three of Kapugedera/Van Dort/Daniel should be included- since Jayasuriya may end up being a passenger for most of the series.

As an additional bowling option, Pradeep Jayaprakashdaran, who played in an ODI against India may be considered . (in place of Daniel )

Interesting that Lewis and Johnson were picked for the Twenty20 match yet aren't playing in the VB Series. Although I guess McGrath and Lee aren't playing the Twenty20 but are playing the VB Series but Dorey should be in it at least.

I think Dorey could have some success against Sri Lanka with his height. It's strange and maybe a bit premature but it could pay off. It's a shame how we're picking some of our lesser fast bowlers ahead of Gillespie, Kasprowicz, Bichel and Nicholson.

I agree with the guys you mentioned except for Nicholson. Its a shame although they had there chances and blew it. This One day series will hopefully be a close one but the way Sri Lanka are playing at the moment i dont hold much hope of that. South Africa and Australia should have some tight matches.
