the cilic win was one of the few exceptions we have had in the big 4 era, you know that as well as i do...you really cannot use that as an example to make your case here...in 2009, lightning struck rafa at the french in the shape of soderling, did that make the french open "open" that year or the next?
Cilic played nishi in the final not a big 4. It was two new guys in the final. I think it's fair to say the gap between 5 to 10 and 1 to 4 is much smaller
Hell rafa isn't even in that 4 on rankings anymore.

2009 doesn't work because rafa missed Wimbledon that year though. He was obviously still head and shoulders above the pack. Also soder made another French final didn't he?

Basically my question still stands. Will you be that surprised if rafa beats Novak in the quarters?

i wouldn't be surprised at anything rafa does at roland garros (or for that matter what federer does at wimbledon, but i don't expect him to win there)...however i don't expect him to beat novak, i also wouldn't be surprised if he lost before the quarters this year...

Murray and Watson through. Michael Bentine beaten in four sets. Konta currently a set down.

Shocks today so far, Lopez (11th Seed) beaten in the men's draw and Radwanska (seeded 14th) out of the ladies.

Murray looked pretty solid.

Beck was really fighting well to beat Radwanska, did not look like a player who is 3-13 this year at all. Radwanska was pretty flat though.

Venus Williams also out to Sloane Stephens, looked lethargic at times. Stephens is due one of her random Slam runs again.

Not only does Federer have the easiest draw amongst the top players, his tournament is also spread at over an extra couple of days compared to the likes of Rafa and Novak.

Haha so true. At least bouchard has made a grand slam final though. The hype on Dimi has got to stop. I've. Followed him closely for ages now and he's far too hit and miss. Obviously attractive game style but he's a prettier yet ****ter version of Tsonga 2008-2012.

yes dimitrov is very overrated...so far his greatest accomplishments have been an aesthetically pleasing game that doesn't stand up to pressure and sharapova...
