the finals couldn't have been played by two nicer men...class act both of them....
I hear (according to tv) that Federer is being quoted as odds on to win next year's event, and only something like 7-1 to win the next 5.

that's just a generalization....he is only 22 and 17, 18, 19 is not etched in stone....
I know. Amritraj meant he should have developed his game in the front court better when he was a lot younger.

i think the point that they are trying to make is that when it comes to power tennis, men have shown themselves to be much much better than women, i don't know whether the 500th ranked man can beat the top women players, in fact i doubt it very much, but the gulf in level of play is indeed vast....so the question was that if you want to watch top quality power tennis, why would you watch the women?
That was what I'd interpreted it as as well.

I reckon even John McEnroe at whatever age he is now would have a fighting chance against any of the women tennis players. And lets face it there aren't that many people who go to watch senior tour tennis (or whatever it's called) to watch the tennis itself as opposed to those who go to see the characters involved.

There's a difference. By your argument, we should stop watching humans play sport altogether, as they're clearly inferior to animals - no human can run as fast as a horse, for example. However, the women are performing at their life's peak - they're not gonna get any better, just like the men. The seniors' tour - just like U-19 tours - are for players who are probably going to improve or have been better before.

The point is with the seniors tour there are characters there so that's why it exists and that's why people are interested in it, I was fairly interested in the men's final stages because it was the best players in the world playing (even tho the final was one-sided) - women's tennis just doesn't have anything going for it from my viewpoint, it is just a rubbish version of what is already out there with less characters and thoroughly unlikeable blokettes like Venus winning.

John McEnroe was serving at 115-118 miles per hour in a match of his I watched in Wimbledon. Thats pretty damn good.

How well do you know your tennis history?

A guy called Bobby Riggs made similar claims about Jelly Bean King, winner of 20 Wimbledon Championships.

She thrapsed him, the arrogant piece of (voice fades into distance).

(voice comes back) Earlier, Riggs had beaten Margaret Court and had challenged Billie-Jean on many occasions for huge sums of money (he was an ex-Wimbledon champion who basically became a hustler). She eventually agreed for the sake of wimminkind just to shut him up.

not many people know the story of when richard williams was going on about how Venus and Serena could beat any male tennis player, this was in about 2000. And a German guy nearing the end of his career, he was about 34-35 challenged each of them to a set. He beat Serena 6-0 and Venus 6-1, this guy was ranked 500 in the world and he still wallaped them...

That post is full of inaccuracies, the player in question was Karsten Braasch from Germany, he was 30 (not 34-35)years old in 1998(not 2000) when the match took place , his world ranking was 203 (not 500), he beat serena 6-1 (not 6-0), and Venus 6-2(not 6-1) and above all he himself admitted that none of them took the match seriously. Williams' sister play great tennis and It is much more entertaining than Roddick's, Hewitt's or Safins game.

And lastly Richard Williams was only responding to a Jealous Mcneroe's remark about Female Tennis player's shouldn't be paid same money as men.

I take a Tennis match as an entertainment and I can tell you that this year's Women's finals(or for that matter Women's Tennis at Wimbeldon 2005 ) were much better than Men's and Venus/Davenport deserved more money than Federer/Roddick which was a one sided boring match and almost every one including Roddick and Federer knew the outcome of the match.

ok, i read the report around three years ago, but the basic idea was right, a poor mens player who basically wasnt good enough to enter ATP tournaments at the time and he thrashed the williams sister after their father said they would beat any male...

Typical Male Cahuvinistic statement. At this year's Wimbledon Women's Tennis was much better than Men's Tennis.

And who gives a flying f@#! about whether the Brits like Venus or not. She has every right to express her joy after winning the title. At least she didn't break her rackets like Mcenroes and Connors et all.

Karsten Braasch wrote a column about this.

"Both sisters are great tennis players and hit the ball extremely well. However, if you've been playing on the men's tour there are certain shots you can play that are going to put them in difficulty. Try and put a lot spin on the ball - I was hitting the ball with a degree of spin they don't face week-in, week-out. Another key is to chase down every shot. In our match, they were putting shots into the corners that on the women's tour would be winners but I was able to return them.

In the end I won, but neither myself, nor Venus or Serena took the game too seriously - we were just having a bit of fun."

Funny how people make you pay for the one stupid statement made by you. Do you know the context of this whole issue, Mr. Williams may have gone overboard with this statement but what do you expect him to say after people like John Mcenroe said something like "...Any good college male player could beat the Williams sisters, and so could any man on the Senior Tour."

Fact is the standard of women's tennis today is much better than men's and it was evident in Wimbledon.

im not sure about that, theres about 8-10 who could win a grand slam, and on a given day id say most people in the top 50 of the mens could...
look at some of the names low in the rankings, Moya 28, Ferrero 31, Haas 23, Massu 30, Ancic 32, Grosjean 35 etc... these guys could all win grand slams...
in the womens if u get outside the top 15 most struggle to make the semis of slams with the exception of players coming back from injuries...

Wimbledon isnt the ideal place to show the strength of mens tennis cause most players just dont play on grass...

And your point is ? Does that prove my post wrong in any wat ? Yeah women tennis is not as powerful as men's but that doesn't mean it is not quality Tennis. and that's why they should be paid equal amount. Infact Men's tennis tournaments should be stopped until they find someone who can consistently challenge Federer. It has become boring to watch one sided matches.
