"On the results of this series". . A series in which we've been missing four key players including our captain, and are still in with a chance at winning it 2-0 against a side who are clearly not as bad as everyone thought.

Next time you're going to judge a team, try looking at who's actually playing in it. :p
:D

I dont know about 4 key players.
Ever since Vaughan assumed the captaincy he seemed to become a bit Brearley - like.
The captain who bats a bit. :p

Come on, do you really think Giles is going to go all that flash in Australia?

As for Jones, is he ever going to return from injury?

Harmison? OK.

More to the point, it seems unlikely that that Ashes winning team will play again.
And why should they? What is this fascination with this talismanic team? Is it a fear that England can't maintain that success without those exact same individuals?
Australia and WI maintained their dominance over a long period of time despite changes of personnel and captain. Is England incapable of the same?

On the strength of this series, maybe they are...

Yawn, whitewashed NZ and WI twice, beat SA in SA and the only other team to do that since their reintroduction to Test cricket are Australia. Beat Australia. I don't see any other team matching those feats.
Sorry Scaly, let me rephrase that.
I may have been over-reaching...

One good year does not a decade make

Australia are and were toothless without their two best bowlers. England are supposedly the 2nd best Test side so why would you expect them to be as dominant as a side like WI or Australia in their pomp?

Hold it, hold it, hold it.
I thought you guys were now claiming to be the best in the world! ;)

But yeah, that's about the strength of it.
From the point of view of claiming to be the second best in the world, and wanting to be the best in the world (though it would be a very 'old' English thing to be content with second place :p) there is a hell of a long way to go. Just think back to the start of the series, and, really, take an objective look at this Sri Lankan side. As I said, for a team claiming to be the second best in the world and aiming to beard the lion in its den this winter, England have a long way to go to prove they are worthy.

One good summer does not a decade make.
You know, I haven't heard English players (other than during the post-Ashes euphoria) lay claim to the fact that we are the best team in the world.

Boycott did, I agree, but he just loves winding you up.

As far as the standard of Sri Lanka's cricket is concerned, didn't they give a certain upside-down team a couple of huge frights a few months ago?

In my mind though, what really counts is purely and simply this - that in a few months time England prove once again that they are better than Australia. Everything else is window-dressing.

Tres bowled, although TMS have no clue how. What happened? Did he go back when he shouldn't have, or did a doosra go between bat & pad? Or what?

EDIT Geoffrey reckons he should have been forward. Got it now.

Norwood's on Fire
Let's hope Cook can stick around with Strauss.

How's Strauss playing, does he look comfortable?

Oh come on England, have to play Jayasuriya with a degree of comfort otherwise they're just going to get strangled.

Norwood's on Fire
Nevermind, cricinfo is the saviour

30.3 Jayasuriya to Cook, no run, Dropped! short of length ball just outside off stump, batsman defends on the back-foot, straighter one and gets the nick, Sagakkara drops it and dives for the 2nd attempt but its unreachable

Strauss, Please throw your wicket and show us that you are no good against Spin.

Cook - get out man, this is going to be your last test anyway (for a while).

Quite possibly - he did look quite awful out there today. You couldn't say that his batting is sufficiently better than Colly's to stay n the side given the huge difference in their standard of fielding.
