Apparently ganguly has resigned hs captaincy from bengal team for the test match against maharashtra. It would be interesting to see whether ganguly makes it to the last 2 one-dayers against RSA or for that matter the test team against lanka.

Okay. Time to find tickets tomorrow then!

Eden Gardens. I have watched so many memorable matches there. Many for the right reasons. Some for not the right reasons.
Carry a banner for CW so as we can identify you...maybe :)

As a "batting allrounder". Apparently, Zaheer Khan was not selected because the selection committee feels ganguly can carry out the job.

From cricinfo:

Mukherjee, who inspected Eden Gardens yesterday, said police would make arrests in the event of any demonstration inside the venue during the match."Those wanting to hold any such demonstration should better keep off the stadium and also the match, otherwise such acts will prompt the police to make arrests," he said.

If a person holds a banner protesting against the Chappell/and or More should not be arrested in my opinion. Shouting slogans would fall in the same.

Nothing wrong with a peaceful expression even inside the stadium in my opinion. Its freedom of speech and all. To stop that would mean dictatorship.

Demonstration as in walking as a group or resulting in others not watching the match however should not rightfully be tolerated.

I guess if its outside the stadium it would be fine, but inside would be wrong imo
Also considering the reactions of the past few days, poice would like to pre-empt trouble. A peaceful demonstration in Kolkata doesnt take too long to get inflamed into something terrible if the issue is emotive enough..and this one is for Kolkatan.

Whatever it takes!!!
you know, I am here at Trivandrum getting trained in the corporate learning centre of my company TCS and I happened to sit next to a couple of Kolkata guys yesterday and they were using very foul language to talk about Ganguly's omission....... And I was shocked to learn that the language wasn't intended towards Ganguly. :-O But I can now see why everyone talks about the "emotional Bengalis".

I was just seeing local bengali news. The team walked out of the Eden and faced a huge crowd with a police barrier of sorts of course.

They were shouting slogans pro Ganguly and anti Chappell-More.

More is the new 'target' apparently with even a 5-7 year kid saying More and Chappell should be removed.

Not only were Chappell's effugies burnt, the whole process which takes place fore the dead is cremated with the shradha food and all also prepared and even minor aspects taken care of like the ornaments etc required in the ceremony.

I will not be able to go to the match as I have to catch a flight for a business trip tomorrow sadly. So that leaves me out of facing the dilemna of going or not going to the match because of possible crowd trouble.

It's pathetic to see the locals protesting over Ganguly's exclusion. Just because he is a Bengali, they support him blindly. This regionalism, though unavoidable, is India's undoing all these years.

He(Ganguly) was beginning to be an obstacle in India's performance. Now that he has been kicked in the butt, he is bowling, fielding better, going through the fitenss regime, etc.....The Prince of Calcutta has come down from his throne and mingled with the mortals....Good for him and Indian cricket.

My God I hate regional bias, I really do.

Idiotic display there. Almost makes me want Ganguly to fail in the first test against SL so this will all hopefully end.

On burning effigies : Here is a joke I posted on the Salman Butt Jokes thread in Cricket Humour. I have just changed the names of the protoganists :)

Sources very close to Eden Gardens stadium in Calcutta have confirmed that things are indeed looking bad. The PTI special correspondent on multicultural affairs, has sent us this dispatch from Calcutta:

“Well Sanjay, things are really bad – according to the police commissioner of Calcutta, the gravity of the situation has forced the local authorities to take unprecedented steps to limit quota of effigy burning to 2 per person 2 selectors or 1 selector + 1 Coach - whichever is heavier.

Anyone, attempting to carry or buy more than one effigy of said individuals will be shot on sight and their remains beaten with a cricket bat.

The commissioner also said that whereas the Police were not in the business of being killjoys and suppressors of free and entertaining thoughts, it was their duty to ensure that there were enough effigies left for all to enjoy and not a select few to gloat upon."

Well I am going to be in the city but still cannot go to the match as I have other stuff to attend to. :(

Any way if any one does not know - the stuff people can carry in Indian stadiums is very limited.

You cannot carry tiffin boxes or any food except fruits which have already been cut. No cameras, mirrors, news papers, water etc allowed. The food and water problem is solved with canteens at the ground.

I hope Tendulkar hits a century of course and yes I will miss it if he does!

Regarding the green top - Ian Botham was given a green top to destroy India in a match in the 80s due to politics inside the BCCI. I really hope the same does not happen today.

If its a green top and India put SAfrica in, you might see Pathan, RP, AA destroy the opposition :p

If they lose the toss , however..........
