Today was proof positive that Jacques Kallis is the best batsman in the world.
Been my opinion for quite some time but ...

was lbw to Lee early on and would not have looked too clever if he'd holed out off Warne.

Whilst I still think he's not better than Lara and equal to Ponting and Dravid, how awesome were his pull shots today.

They're not exactly the Ponting pull, but they look so cool.

On a fourth/fifth day pitch, the Aussie paceman plus Warne would 9/10 times be enough. Where you need wickets, is in the first innings, on the first day. The ground is damp, the conditions are cloudy, and it`s Bracken`s home ground. Meh!
No, it's the fact that Ponting's a tool. I don't know why he waits so long to give MacGill a go, you don't give a bowler much confidence if they have to wait until 50+ overs to come on. Steve Waugh used to get him in early, even before Warne. Ponting missed a great trick to have dual spin the instance that Prince came in.

How come Shane only bowled 7 overs?

That's the least I've seen him bowl on the first day for a while.

Shane Warne doesn't need a spinners' deck to bowl well though.

Surely he's more dangerous once the ball isn't new?

Perhaps Ricky is not a fan of a two spinner policy (especially when one of them is MacGill) and was trying to make a point. It would also go someway to explaining why MacGill couldn't get a look in in England. I would guess the captain would have more influence on the selectors away from home.

But I've no idea what Ponting's real view are believed to be. Any Australians?

I'm guessing this was found out during that poll given to Aussie players regarding various topics such as who is the most dangerous batsman, with Lara being voted the most followed by Sachin and Dravid and Flintoff voted best bowler ahead of Murali. They also had voting for their best player with Ponting being voted best batsman and Warne best bowler over McGrath. They just happened to vote Billy as the worst umpire, and Rudi was voted as the best umpire. Probably because he gives them crazy LBWs around the wicket :p

:-O

Any credence the poll may've aspired too just evaporated! Rudi?!?!

Even when the ball was older, he didn`t turn it. A bit.

Based on?
I wasn't impressed by Lee's insistence to know a reason for why an LBW shout was turned down from Aleem Dar...they showed it clearly on TV a few times, and he kept on going "I need to know why it wasn't out" and then continuing his questioning going "why" over and over...not something that makes him very likeable at all.
This sort of thing is what people are talking about when they talk of overappealing...it's not overappealing in that they appeal too much, but it's not very gracious of them to keep on questioning the umpire and pressuring him.

I was watching at that stage, and all I saw was him half-question it after the ball, and then ask again at the end of the over. And these days bowlers are asking reasons more option. But yeah, perhaps he went a little overboard.

I have always had the impression that MacGill wasn't the most popular teammate in the Australian side.....particularly with the skipper.

Did MacGill and Ponting have an argument on the field today?

I was at the game but on the highlights on the news I thought I saw them say something about it.
