well i think he was refering to Hussey & Martyo doing an all-rounder role, but then again i dunno...
Martyn is reluctant to bowl at all and has been for a few years due to his back.

He was a decent bowler tho.

Funny...I had a dream last night but all I can remember was Martyn opening the bowling.

If the current schedule is to be maintained, maybe it's time to give him Tests only.
well yea maybe that could be the best alternative because along with Pigeon & McGrath, Gilly is one of Australia's most improtant players. If he is out of the OD team i think Australia can cope without him in a replacement partnership of Jaques/Clarke.

I'm guessing you meant Warney aswell? or someone else?

I know that but that has nothing to do with the fact that he doesn't like bowling, and Ponting didn't like bowling him when he was in the team in case he further injured his back.

Katich is a decent Chinamen bowler (got a 6-fer in a Test, albeit against Zimbabwe). Underused IMO, can give it quite a rip.
No. I am dead certain that one of the Waughs said that Katich should be used as a pace bowling allrounder during the Ashes and mentioned something about him being very handy in the nets.

I'd never drop Gilly but I reckon Haddin will be a decent successor when he gets the chance.
He won't though because by the time Gilchrist hangs up the boots (that's the only way he's going to lose his spot), Hartley will be the best glovesman in the country.

I think the best thing for Gilly - and Australia - would be to give him the VB series off, or at least most of it. In that time, he can rest and smack around some fellow Aussies for a change.

Well I found it, but it actually disproved my stance!

http://content-aus.cricinfo.com/engvaus/content/story/218122.html

However, Steve Waugh, who played at The Oval only when the series was sealed, has suggested an even bigger shock by requesting that Katich, an occasional wrist spinner, is bowled more by Ponting. "The dilemma with four is whether two quicks and two spinners is too much of a gamble, particularly if Glenn McGrath plays with a question mark over his fitness," Waugh wrote in The Sunday Times.

"I would pick McGrath, Brett Lee, Shane Warne and Stuart MacGill as the main men and spring a surprise by using Simon Katich as a third spinner. Katich is underrated ... he is a guy who raises his game under pressure and has that mongrel streak about him that inspires his mates."

I swear, the first time I read that, way back when it was written, it said "third seamer." Cricinfo even named the article differently at the time, suggesting the same thing...

I wouldn't put it past cricinfo to have misheard what Waugh said and write it down as seamer.

In fact, I believe the original article said that Waugh wanted Wayne Holdsworth to replace Jason Gillespie in the side...

Ah! I thought it was quite odd at first too when I read it a few months back!

I thought Waugh had gone mad.

Wouldn't be a bad idea at all really. Martyn should still be in the team and you don't really need any more than 4 bowlers when one of them is Warne and one of them is McGrath.
Umm that theory is still to be proven against quality sides. Without Gillespie at his best, it is very doubtful 4 pronged is good enough. If not a 5th genuine bowler, a 5th player who can fill in a few overs (like Symonds in the 2nd test) is definitely needed according to me. We disagree then on this.
